The 2/13th Australian General Hospital was established at Tampoi, Johor, Malaya during 1941. On 26th January 1942 it was evacuated to St Patrick's School, Katong. The commanding officer was Lieutenant Colonel Douglas Pigdon. When Singapore fell to the Japanese on 15th February 1942, those doctors, nurses and patients not killed in frenzied Japanese murders became prisoners-of-war for the next three and a half years. Thirteen sisters and nurses were those AANS nurses murdered by the Japanese in the 'Bangka Island Massacre'. The following honours were awarded to unit members: one OBE; three MBE; one RRC; eight MID.
