Biography

Eileen Mary Ita Short was born in 15th January 1904 at Maryborough, Queensland, Australia. She was the younger daughter of Henry Short and Bridget Smith.[1]

Eileen completed her nursing studies and was appointed matron of the tiny Isisford Hospital, Isisford, Queensland.

Eileen Short is a Military Veteran.
Served in the Second Australian Imperial Force 1941-1946
2/13th Australian General Hospital
On 21st August 1941, Eileen was commissioned as a nurse into the Australian Army Nursing Service and attached to the 2/13th Australian General Hospital, then based in Malaya.[2] Along with 64 other Australian nurses and many civilians, including women and children, Eileen was evacuated from Singapore on 12th February aboard the ill-fated Vyner Brooke. The ship was discovered by the Japanese as it was entering the Bangka Strait two days later, bombed and strafed repeatedly, and sank in twenty minutes.[3]

Eileen Short was a prisoner of war of the Japanese during the Second World War.

She became a prisoner of war of the Japanese.[4] She was discharged on 4th April 1946.

She passed away, unmarried, aged 71 years, on 25th April 1975 at Toowoomba, Queensland.[5]
