Biography

Matthew Byrne was born in Tillystown, Shankill, County Dublin, Ireland. His civil birth registration gives a birth date of Saturday 15th June 1889. He was the son of Peter Byrne and Anne (Keddy) Byrne.

He appears in the 1901 Ireland Census, age 11, living with his parents and four siblings, at home, in Shankill, County Dublin, Ireland. He appears again in the 1911 Ireland Census, age 21, but this time he is 75 miles away, living and working as a servant in the home of Harriet Wetherington, a widow farmer in Nafferty, Carrickmacross, County Monaghan, Ireland. Also present and working as a servant is Mary Connor, his future wife. She was from Carrickmacross, and apparently he met her there after moving for work.

He married Mary Connor in Carrickmacross, County Monaghan, Ireland in June 1911, two months after the 1911 Ireland Census. After returning to Shankill, they then lived for a while in Roebuck, Dundrum, County Dublin, Ireland, where Matthew found work. They had four children together.

1912: Anne Byrne, born in Carrickmacross, married in 1938, died 1997.
1914: Mary Byrne, born in Shankill, County Dublin, married in 1935, died 1999.
1915: Peter Byrne, born in Dundrum, County Dublin, married in 1947, died 1993.
1919: Kathleen Byrne, born in Dundrum, County Dublin, never married, died 1966 without issue.

Mary (Connor) Byrne passed away in 1921 from Spanish flu, which was rampant in Ireland at the time. Matthew returned to Shankill, County Dublin with his young family. He was age 31. He worked on his father's farm, and needed a mother for his four children. Family testimony suggests that his second marriage might have been an arranged marriage.

He married Susan (Quearney) Brady in Cabinteely, County Dublin, Ireland in 1922. She was a young widow from Santry, County Dublin, Ireland, having been married to Lance Sergeant James Brady for just two years from 1916 to 1918. He was lost at sea in the sinking of the RMS Leinster off Kingstown Harbour, County Dublin, Ireland in October 1918. She was living and working in the old Glebe House in Shankill. Matthew and Susan had six more children together in Shankill, County Dublin, Ireland, three of whom had passed away by 2024.

1926: Edward Byrne, never married, died 1994 without issue.
1928: Bridget Philomena Byrne, emigrated to England, married twice, died 2022.
1929: Martha Byrne, married Patrick Murphy in 1952, died 2018.
Three more family still living in 2024.

His father Peter Byrne passed away age 67, in Shankill, County Dublin, Ireland in 1927, when Matthew was age 38. His mother Anne (Keddy) Byrne passed away age 82, in Shankill, County Dublin, Ireland in 1938, when Matthew was age 49.

Matthew passed away aged 56 in Shankill, County Dublin, Ireland in 1945, of Bright's disease. His second wife Susan (Quearney) Byrne passed away age 79 in St.Colmcille's Hospital, Loughlinstown, County Dublin in 1977. She was a widow for 31 years. Matthew had 10 children, 36 grandchildren and 69 great grandchildren.

Matthew and Susan are buried in St.Peter's Cemetery, Little Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland, with their son Edward Byrne, in grave QA50. Matthew's first wife Mary is buried very close by in grave HA18.
