Biography

Thomas was the child of Daniel Broyles and Mary Unknown . He was most likely born in western North Carolina before it became the state of Tennessee. In the 1850 census he gives his birthplace as Virginia, but his father's Revolutionary War pension application says the family moved to western North Carolina around the year 1781.

He married his first cousin, Susanna Yeager, sometime in late 1805 or early 1806 almost certainly in Washington County, Tennessee, where they both grew up. For some reason there is no record of the marriage.

Around the year 1815 the family moved to White County, Tenn., where they stayed for thirty years or so. Sometime in the 1840's he and a number of his sons moved to Laclede County, Missouri, establishing the Broyles family in that county.

Keith[1] assigns Thomas as a son of Daniel Broyles based on correspondence he had with a granddaughter of Thomas plus the fact that he had a son named Daniel, but he noted that there was dissent from another descendant.

Thomas and Susan had an unusually large family-- 16 children without any twin births. He is said to have been a teacher as well as a farmer.[1]

1814 - Thomas is on the tax list of Washington Co., Tenn. He is not on the tax list in 1815.

1816 - Thomas is named to a jury in White Co., Tenn.[2]

22 Feb 1839 - Thomas sells land to Barlett Belcher in White County.[1]

11 Jun 1855 - Susanna appoints Thomas as her attorney to collect sums due her from the estate of her father Solomon Yeager, dec'd of White Co., Tenn.[1]

12 Apr 1856 - His date of death is found in a letter written this day by his wife to son Richard of Nodaway County, Missouri. "Your father is dead, he died March 28, he died happy he was willing to die he said he was going home to glory".[1]
