Denis John Wolko Browne was born on 2nd April 1892 in Melbourne, Victoria (Australia).
He was the first British surgeon to devote his practice entirely to the care of children.Browne was a captain with the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps during World War I, and he served in Gallipoli with the 13th Light Horse Regiment.
He then moved to England and joined the staff of the Hospital for Sick Children at Great Ormond Street (Now Great Ormond Street Hospital). He introduced several devices to enhance the care of children with surgical problems.
Browne married firstly Helen de Guerry Simpson, a novelist. They had one daughter, Clemence (b.1929).
He married secondly Moyra Blanche Madeleine Ponsonby, who later became the vice president of the Royal College of Nursing and the superintendent of St. John Ambulance. Moyra was the daughter of Vere Brabazon Ponsonby, 9th Earl of Bessborough. Their marriage produced two children, a son and a daughter. His son is the libel barrister Desmond Browne QC, a former Chairman of the Bar of England and Wales.
