Biography

Isaac Orville Brooks, b. 20 Jun 1815, d. 19 Mar 1864, m. Susan William Marsh, b. 15 Apr 1821, d. 18 Nov 1871. She was a daughter of William and Susan H. Marsh, and a granddaughter of the Revolutionary soldier Capt. Billie Marsh and his wife, Sarah Stewart.

ISAAC ORVILLE BROOKS, m. Susan William Marsh and had:

  1. William Marsh Brooks, b. 2-13-1839. d. 5-20-1902, m. Jemima Elizabeth Hawley, b. 7-7-1844, d. 9-18-1888, daughter of William and Margaret (Morris) Hawley. He enlisted 3-14-1862 from Moore County, in the North Carolina troops, under the command of Capt. James O. A. Kelly. He was listed as Sergeant in the 50th regiment. Capt. Kelly was an uncle of Jemima Elizabeth (Hawley) Brooks. William Marsh Brooks was transferred from the 50th regiment and was stationed at Fort Fisher. He was stationed at Raleigh at the close of the war. After the war closed he returned to his plantation near Jonesboro, N. C., and there he died in 1902. His life was one of service and good will towards his fellow man, which won for him the love and respect of his neighbors. He was an instigator and builder of the Jonesboro Baptist Church and he lived to see his son, Rev. Charles Vance Brooks, pastor of the church, and his daughters active in the different departments of the church work.
  2. Anne Dismukes Brooks, b. 9-14-1840, d. 7-19-1909, m. John A. Hawley, b. 1-16-1835, d. 1-19-1909. They lived in Harnett County, N. C., and are buried at the old Antioch Baptist Church cemetery. He was a brother of Jemima Elizabeth (Hawley) Brooks. He enlisted 5-4-1862 from Moore County, Company F, under the command of Capt. James O. A. Kelly.
  3. Ruth Terrell Brooks, b. 7-25-1842, m. 12-10-1868, John B. McFarland, son of John and Margaret McFarland. John B. McFarland d. June, 1911. He enlisted from Moore County in Company E, 70th North Carolina Regiment, during the War Between the States.
  4. Joab Terrell Brooks, b. 10-17-1844, d. 10-7-1910, m. 11-10-1868 in Chatham County, N. C., Mary Ann Dorsett, b. 7-5-1850, d. 11-15-1933, daughter of William B. and Margaret (Brooks) Dorsett. They were married by Rev. Robert Henry Marsh. Joab Terrell Brooks enlisted 12-17-1862 from Chatham County, Company F, of the 50th N. C. regiment under the command of Capt. James O. A. Kelly.
  5. John Robert Brooks, b. 1847, m. 12-15-1869 Leona Elkins, daughter of Joel Elkins that married 4-24-1837 Sarah Harris, in Chatham County, N. C. They lived on his share of the Isaac Orville Brooks homeplace and both are buried in Chatham County, N. C.
  6. Dr. Mathias Willis Brooks, b. 1849, d. 3-28-1918, moved to Indiana and married Eva Eunice York, d. 1-14-1940. They had issue a. Harlan Brooks, d. 7-6-1943. b. Nettie C. Brooks, m. John L. Griffith, 4201 E. 62nd St., Indianapolis, Ind. c. Arthur Terrell Brooks of Niceville, Fla. d. Charles E. Brooks, d. 11-13-1946. e. Walter H. Brooks, d. 6-4-1926. f. Lillie S. Brooks, m. Richard Hurley, d. 1-16-1945, 5052 E. 13th St., Indianapolis, Ind. g. Rosalie E. Brooks, m. Kenneth J. Loechle, 58 N. Elizabeth St., Indianapolis, Ind.
  7. Emaline Frances Brooks, b. 1851, d. 9-27-1905, m. 11-12-1872 Neal Yarboro, d. 9-3-1899. They lived in what is now Lee County, N. C., and both are buried there.
  8. Mattie Brooks (Pattie), b. 1853, d. 1929, transferred her membership from Rives Chapel Church in Chatham County, N. C., to the Jonesboro Baptist Church in 1909. She lived with her nephew, John A. McFarland in Jonesboro, N. C., where she died in 1930 (single).
  9. Elizabeth Brooks, b. 1856, d. 2-22-1915, m. James Register.
  10. Margaret Brooks (Maggie), m. James Elkins, son of Joel and Sarah (Harris) Elkins of Chatham County, N. C. They lived on the old Isaac Orville Brooks plantation in Chatham County, N. C., and are buried there. Had issue among others, Beta Elkins, m. Luther J. Britt, lawyer of Lumberton, N. C.
  11. Isaac Brooks, III, died in early manhood with typhoid fever, single.[1]
