Biography

Joab was born in 1770. He was the son of Joab Brooks and Catherine Dimmaux. 12 May 1778 Thomas Brooks was appointed guardian to Sarah, Joab and John Brooks orphans of Joab Brooks dec'd, he giving Bond with Thomas Brooks Jr and Samuel Brooks at 1000 pounds each.[1]

He passed away in 1844.

JOAB BROOKS, JR., m. Ruth Terrell Brooks, daughter of Isaac and Ruth (Terrell) Brooks and had issue:

  • Elizabeth W. Brooks, b. 1793, d. 1876, joint heir with her brother, Evander W. Brooks, to the old home place. She left her property to her niece, Sally Brooks, wife of her nephew, Joseph Terrell Brooks who was Execr. of her will in Jan., 1876.
  • John Terrell Brooks, Esqr., b. 1798, m. 2 Dec 1829 Nancy Harris, b. 1805, d. 1879, daughter of Benjamin Harris, Jr., b. 1775, d. 1866
  • Catherine Dimmaux Brooks d. prior to 1842, m. John Culberson and had Nancy Culberson, m. Daniel Murchison, b. 1882.
  • Ruth Brooks, m. 27 Sep 1826 Robert Harper and moved to Georgia.
  • Winnifred Brooks, m. ____Harper and moved to Georgia. These two sisters are said to have married brothers of Hannah Harper that married Joseph John Brooks. Both Harper families moved to Georgia.
  • Nancy Brooks, m.____Stoner and had Terrell Stoner.
  • Emaline Brooks, b. 1813, m. John Robert Marsh, b. 16 Oct 1813, brother of Susan William Marsh that married Isaac Orville Brooks, brother of Emaline.
  • Margaret H. Brooks, m. William Dorsett and had:
    • Roxanna Dorsett, m. Joab W. Murchison, b. 1846, son of Daniel and Nancy (Culberson) Murchison.
    • Margaret Dorsett, d. 12-23-1931, m. 1st ____ McMath, m. 2nd W. H. Steel.

    • Mary Ann Dorsett, m. Joab Brooks, son of Isaac Orville and Susan (Marsh) Brooks. Mary Ann (Dorsett) Brooks, d. 1934.
  • Josiah Hawkins Brooks, d. 1865, m. in Randolph County, NC, 11 Sep 1849 Nancy Jane McCain. They had one son, James Brooks, b. 1850, left Chatham County when a young man and nothing is known of his family. Josiah Hawkins Brooks lived and died in Siler City, N. C. Josiah Hawkins Brooks was listed among those receiving degrees in the first graduating class of Wake Forest College in 1839. He was a noted educator of Chatham County and a prominent lawyer of Siler City, NC. The History of Wake Forest College says he was a minister, serving churches in both Virginia and North Carolina.
  • Isaac Orville Brooks, b. 20 Jun 1815, d. 19 Mar 1864, m. Susan William Marsh, b. 15 Apr 1821, d. 18 Nov 1871. She was a daughter of William and Susan H. Marsh, and a granddaughter of the Revolutionary soldier Capt. Billie Marsh and his wife, Sarah Stewart.
  • Evander E. Brooks, b. 1821, m. 1841 in Guilford County, NC, Luzena Levisa Beeson, b. 1823, daughter of Col. Isaac and Levisa (Williams) Beeson. He was joint heir with his sister, Elizabeth W., to the old home place. Elizabeth W. lived with her brother in the old Joab Brooks home near Siler City, N. C. His children constituted the 4th generation to live on the land granted Joab Brooks, Sr., in 1761.
  • Sarah "Sally" Brooks, m. Solomon Bray, b. 27 Aug 1802, d. 19 Oct 1848. Sarah (Brooks) Bray d. 21 Oct 1848. Solomon Bray was a son of Eli Bray, a grandson of Henry and Sarah Bray, and a great grandson of Henry Bray, pioneer of this family in Chatham County, NC
  • Julia Brooks, d. 1883, m. 1st Gray Barbee Marsh, son of the Revolutionary soldier, Capt. Billy Marsh, m. 2nd _____ Futrall. By her first husband she had:
    • James Gray Marsh, b. 1825, m. Martha H. Hackney, b. 1827 and had:
      • Julia A. Marsh, b. 1845
      • William Marsh, b. 1847
      • Daniel G. Marsh, b. 1848
