Biography

Flag of Yorkshire (adopted 2008)
Harriet (Broadbent) Blackwell was born in Yorkshire, England.

Harriet Broadbent, daughter of Benjamin Broadbent (bef.1804-bef.1886) and Alice (Barker) Broadbent (bef.1807-1872), was born at Flockton, Thornhill, Yorkshire, England and was baptised on 5 February 1827 at Flockton, Yorkshire, England.[1][2]

In 1841, 14 year old Harriet was a female servant for William and Mary Taylor at St Mary's Gate, Honley, Yorkshire, England.[3][4]

Banns of marriage between Robert Blackwell (abt.1829-1879) and Harriet Broadbent were published on the 2, 9 and 16 of January, 1853 at St Michael, Emley, Yorkshire, England.[5]

Robert and Harriet were married on 13 February 1853 at St Michael, Emley (as "Elmley"), Yorkshire, England. Robert's profession was "Coal Miner", but his father's name and profession were not recorded.[6][7]

Children from this marriage were:

In 1861 Harriet, Robert and family were at Skitterick, Emley, Yorkshire, England.'[21]

"Skitterick" was shown as a house on the 1854 Yorkshire Ordnance Survey Map[22] a mile east of Emley, south of Ash Cottage andeast of Whitecross, near the junction of Ash and Woodhouse Lanes (A ‘skitterick’ was a stream which served as an open sewer, and it derives from two Old English words meaning ‘excrement’ and ‘ditch’[23]).

Harriet died in 1864, age 37, at Skitterick Hill, Emley, Yorkshire, England,[24] and was buried on 30 July 1864 at St Michael, Emley, Yorkshire, England.[25]

Residences

Harriet was born in Flockton, Yorkshire, England and had moved 8 miles west to St Mary's Gate, Honley in 1841 where 14 year old Harriet was working as a female servant.

When she married in 1853 Harriet was at Emley Park, south of Emley, which is where her children were born from 1855 to 1857. In 1859 Harriet was at Bank, east of Emley, and at Skitterick in 1861-1864 where she died.
