Betsey (Blackwell) Whitley was born in Yorkshire, England.

Betsey Blackwell, daughter of Robert Blackwell (abt.1829-1879) and Harriet (Broadbent) Blackwell (bef.1827-bef.1864) was born in Elmley Park, Emley, Yorkshire, England and was baptised on 2 September 1855 at St Michael, Emley, Yorkshire, England.^[1][2]

In 1861 Betsey was with her parents and siblings at Skitterick, Emley, Yorkshire, England.^[3]

Betsey's mother, Harriet, died in 1864 when Betsey was 8 years old,^[4] and her father married Hannah (Parkin) Blackwell (1838-bef.1887) on 7 January 1865 at St Augustine, Scissett, Emley, Yorkshire, England.^[5]

In 1871, 16 year old Betsey (as Elizabeth Blackwell) was a servant in the household of John Bates in Oxford Road, Dewsbury, Yorkshire.^[6]

Between 1871 and 1874 Betsey married John Edward Whitley. Children from this marriage were:
