Simon was born c. 27 March 1210 – 1220 at the castle of Montpensier in the French province of Touraine.[1][2]
According to the Vatican[3] his secular name was Simon de Brie or of Brion or of Mainpincien.
Due to his noble birth he became a member of the council of King Louis IX of France. In 1260 he was appointed chancellor and keeper of the great seal.[4]
Pope Urban IV created him cardinal about 1261.[4]
Simon was elected pope on 22 February 1281 and crowned on 23 March 1281 at Orvieto taking the name Martin IV.[3][4] He was dependent for everything on Charles of Anjou whom he at once appointed to the influential position of Roman Senator.[1]
His pontificate ended with his death on 29 March 1285 in Perugia.[3][1]
