Giovanni was born after 1210 in Rome. He was the son of Matteo Rosso Orsini and Perna Caetani.[1]
According to Wikipedia: His brother Giordano was named Cardinal Deacon of San Eustachio by Nicholas III on 12 March 1278. His brother Gentile became Lord of Mugnano, Penna, Nettuno and Pitigliano. Another brother, Matteo Rosso of Montegiordano, was Senator of Rome (probably) in 1279, War Captain of Todi, and Podestà of Siena in 1281. There were five other younger brothers and two sisters.[2]
He was a Roman nobleman. Between 1243 and 1254 he was Cardinal-Deacon of St. Nicola in Carcere Tulliano under by Pope Innocent IV. From 1254 until 1261 he was appointed protector of the Franciscans by Pope Alexander IV. Pope Urban IV appointed him as inquisitor-general.[2][1]
He was elected pope on 25 November 1277, and crowned pope on 26 December 1277. He remained pope, taking the name Nicholas III until his death on 22 August 1280.[3]
