Biography

Alexander Borthwick is a member of Clan Borthwick.

Alexander was the third son of William, 2nd Lord Borthwick. [1]

King James IV signed at Edinburgh a Precept dated 31st March 1491 receiving Alexander Borthwick, [next two are brothers] Masters Adam Borthwick & [this] Alexander Borthwick, William Hay, James Sinclair and William Dalrymple, as attorney or attournies for Margaret Hay, spouse of William Borthwick, son and heir apparent of William Lord Borthwick, in all negotiations, speeches, suits and quarrels moved or to be moved by the said Margaret.[2]

Sir Alexander Borthwick Knt. [of Addislaw] and an Alexander Borthwick [no territorial designations but doubtless the two Alexanders in the 1491 Precept] are the two leading witnesses to a charter by William, Lord Borthwick, to Alan, son of Sir Thomas Borthwick of Colylaw etc., dated 29 Nov 1503.[3]

William, Lord Borthwick, as superior of the lands of Nenthorn, Berwickshire, granted a charter of them to his second son, [this] Alexander Borthwick in Johnstoun upon the resignation dated 27th June 1495 of James Wilson [? tenant].[4]

Hello David, the merge of this profile with Borthwick-409 has been approved. Please could you review, as there is a discrepancy with the mother. I've also posted to the pm of Borthwick-409. If you could confer, that would be excellent. Many thanks. Gillian

Yes you're right. We do not know who his mother was. I have detached his uncle's wife!
