Biography

A grandson of William, 2nd Lord Borthwick. Nisbet, citing a charter of 1550 which he transcribed, stated that this William was then a "cousin-german" of Lord Borthwick.

There is an 'Instrument' under hand of Alexander Young, clerk of St Andrews diocese, notary by apostolic authority, narrating that John Dikesoun, bailie in that part of Jonet Haliburtoun, gave sasine to the Gavin and Elizabeth [?surname] of the above lands, following on precept by the said Jonet, directed to the said John Dikesoun and John Quhitelaw, Mr David Quhitelaw, and William Borthwick in Johnestoun[burn], to enforce in terms of the charter. 30th May 1533.^[1]

This William Borthwick also held the lands of Soutra Mains.^[2]
