The bride looked very attractive in her going away gown, a blue tailormade. During the several years of her residence In Waterloo, she has made many friends and recently has been employed as stenographer with the Soash company. The groom is a designer with a leading Des Moines firm and is worthy in every way the bride he has won. They left this afternoon for Des Moines where the groom has a home in readiness for his bride. 1911 W. H. Barton seems to be involved in starting a new company, and is listed as president of the newly incorportated Waterloo Varnish Manufacturing Company, in Waterloo, Iowa. It was funded with $25,000 dollars.[19] The company seems to be still growing in a 1913 article,. and is still advertizing in 1914. However, the company filed for bankruptcy in 1915.[20]

1912 SILVER ANNIVERSARY for Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Barton. Who on Tuesday celebrated their silver anniversary, entertained a company of twenty-eve guests at their home on Fourth street west. that same evening. The evening was spent socially with games and music as diversions, after which refreshments were served. Mr. and Mrs. Barton were presented with several gifts in honor of the occasion. [21]

1917 By now William is farming and was award the 2nd place pen award for his Single Comb Rhode Island Red pullets at the Waterloo Poultry Assoc Show.[22]

1920 US Census finds the family in Cedar Rapids, Linn, Iowa. (This is suprising. There is a Cedar Township in Black Hawk County, Iowa.) William and Mary are now 53 and 52 years of age and a nephew, Paul W. Scranton, is living with them. William is listed as a livestock breeder.[23] After Mary's sister-in-law, (brother George's wife Nora) died, Mary and Bill took 6-month old Paul Scranton into their home and raised him. That is why he is in the census record.

By 1921, the family seems to have moved back to Waterloo, Iowa.

Yonne's Wedding 1921 -
Honor Brides-Elect —Autumn brides are being showered with courtesies. Several prenuptial affairs are being given this week. The betrothal of Mis Yvonne Barton to M. M. Kentteally was announced to six intimate friends last evening when Mrs. W. H. Barton, mother of the bride-elect entertained at 6 o'clock dinner in their home in Cedar Heights. The wed-ding will take place in the near fu-ture. The dinner tablet was attractive in a dress of pink and white. A bridal couple surrounded by rose petals, stood in the center, from which streamers of pink ran to the cupid place cards and rose nut cups.[24]

1921 He is still farming and W. H. Barton managed the Big Type Poland China Hogs Private Treaty Sale in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Total of 24 hogs with proven sires. Must have been raising them in Cedar Falls, on Rainbow Drive.[25]

1925 US Census records William and Mary Barton and Paul Scranton in the household. Apparently when Paul's father remarried, he did not go back to his father's household. They are living in Cedar Falls, Black Hawk, Iowa. No occupation is recorded.[26]

November 1925 W. H. Barton was an agent for the Hockaday Company and received payment for paint supplies sold to the Black Hawk County, Iowa. Invoice was approved.[27]

1930 US Census records William and Mary Barton and Paul W. Scranton (Nephew) in the household, living in Waterloo, Black Hawk, Iowa. William is listed as a "Commercial Trader in the Paints Industry".[28]

Death

William died March 23, 1932, from a brain hemorrhage as the result of a fall.[29]He is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Waterloo, Black Hawk County, Iowa.[30][31][32] At his death, he was 68 years old, a salesman, a widower, and was living at 418 Franklin Street, Waterloo, Iowa. The death was investigated by the coroner in Hudson, Iowa. Cause of death was "hemorrhage in right parietal region of the brain from concussion from fall", which was caused by a fall on a public highway.[33] He was crossing a street in Waterloo and apparently fell on ice in the street. Two witness said he struck the back of his head. Newspaper article says he was dead before the ambulance arrived at the hospitial. His last residence was with Paul Scanton in Dubuque, Iowa.[34]

Research Notes

Confusion over William's Birth Date and Place.

Seems to be some confusion with son's delayed birth certificate and the 1870 US Census.
  • 1920 US Census has Ralph E Barton Sr.'s father (William) born in Iowa (not true).[35]
  • 1930 US Census has Ralph E Barton Sr.'s father (William) born in New York. [36]
  • Family history passed down to Richard A. H. Barton-7380 indicates father was Elijah Barton and mother Harriette (Bassett) Barton. Harriette Bassett [37] was found in document where they had a son William H. Birthdate makes father 52 when he was born. But William's marriage record clearly lists Elijah and Harriet Barton as parents.
