Biography

Robert Lee Barrett was born on July 12, 1872, in Meansville, Georgia, son of Thomas Jefferson Barrett and Minerva Ann Slade.^[1]

Robert appears in the 1880 census, age 9, living with his family in Pike County, Georgia. His father is a farmer.^[2]

Robert (age 18) married Mary Eugenia Aldredge (age 17) on December 3, 1890, in Pike County, Georgia.^[3] Their children were:

1. Jessie Florence Barrett (1892–1983)
2. Roscoe Pope Barrett (1895–1971)
3. Mettie Minerva Barrett (1898–1980)
4. Emmie Grace Barrett (~1900–1980)
5. Robert Earl Barrett (1903–1978)
6. Inman Barrett (1907–1908)
7. Mildred Maurine Barrett (1909–1995)

By the 1900 census, Robert owns a farm in Eppinger, Georgia, he has been married 9 years and has 3 children.^[4]

By 1910, Robert is 38, and he owns his farm in Meansville, Georgia. All 6 of his children are still at home (ages ranging from 1 to 17). He's been married 18 years.^[5]

Family lore stated that Robert had up and left his wife alone with 6 children. The story intimated that he had run off. For generations, this story was accepted by Robert's grandchildren and great grandchildren. Many years later, many questions later, and because of increased interest in genealogy, Robert's death certificate was found. Robert had not run off. He had died young of Bright's Disease (archaic term for nephritis - an inflammation of the kidneys).

Robert died on March 2, 1919, in Meansville, Georgia, aged 47.^[1] He is commemorated at Fincher Memorial Cemetery, Meansville, Pike County, Georgia.^[6]

Research Notes

The 1900 census has Robert living in Eppinger, Georgia. Meansville was not incorporated until 1913, and Robert did not sell his first farm and move. Whether called Eppinger or Meansville, they are both Militia District 581, Pike County, Georgia.
