Biography

MICHEL AUCOIN is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana, on Plaque 11 Right, La Ville d'Arcangel arrivee le 3 Decembre 1785. Listed with Michel and his wife, Isabelle Hebert, are their children: Jean, Michel, Pierre, Francois, Constant, Marie, Anne, Isabelle, Floriane, and Gregoire. ^[1]

Gregoire Aucoin was born to Michel Aucoin and Isabelle Hebert in St. Enogat, Ille et Vilaine, France on the 25 October 1767, while his parents were in exile from Acadia. He was baptized on 26 October 1767 in Saint-Enogat (part of modern day Dinard across the river from Saint-Malo).^[2][3][4] From 1767 to at least 1782 he lived at Saint-Enogat, Ille-et-Vilaine, France. (All of his younger siblings were born in Saint-Enogat, the youngest, Constance-Jean-Baptiste, in 1782, so this family did not follow many other Acadian families from the Saint-Malo area to Châtellerault in 1773 then to Nantes in 1775.) ^{[citation needed]}

He was (with his parents) on a list of Acadians who wanted to immigrate to Louisiana, dated September 1784, in St. Malo, France.^[5]

With his family he immigrated to Spanish Louisiana. They, both parents and ten children, departed France 12 August 1785 aboard the ship, La Ville D'Archangel, arriving in Louisiana on 3 December 1785 through the port of New Orleans.^[6]

A few years later, he married his second cousin, Marguerite Genevieve Aucoin on February 1, 1789, at the church of St. Francis in Point Coupee, Louisiana.^[7]

By 1793 they had five sons.^[8][9] In 1810 through 1840 they were counted on the census in Assumption Parish, Louisiana.^{[10][11][12][13]}

He died on 8 April 1844 in Plattenville, Assumption Parish, Louisiana.^[14]

Research Notes

The two baptism records for Gregoire Alexis Aucoin give different dates for his birth. The 'greffe' record has a different date than the 'commune' record for his birth and baptism.

The 'greffe' entry is not dated but reads "...né le 25 octobre 1767...baptisé le lendemain..." which would place his birth on the 25th of October and his baptism on the next day, the 26th. The preceding entry in the record is on the 25th of October and the following entry is on the 26th of October.

The 'commune' entry reads "...né le vingt octobre...baptisé le lendemain..." which would place his birth on the 20th of October and his baptism on the next day, the 21st. However, this undated entry is between a preceding entry dated the 25th of October and the following entry on the 26th of October. For his baptism to be on the 21st, the entry would have to be 5 days out of sequence with the adjacent entries.
