Mary married John King in Ireland and migrated to Australia in 1841 with her husband and two daughters Ellen and Catherine. Catherine is believed to have died shortly before they arrived. She and John appear to have had another 9 children before she left them and took up with George Robert Menzies.

Mary seems to have had four brothers - Patrick, Michael, James, Jeremiah. Patrick's daughter Mary (Anglim) Quinlan late in life lived with her aunt Mary in Wangaratta, and died there in 1896.
