Biography

Birth

Albert Allen was born in 1843, the son of John Allen and Sarah (Lucas) Allen.^[1] He was probably born at Hartford, Maine, where both his parents were born and where he was lving with them at the age of 6 in 1850.^[2] The 1900 Census says he was born in October 1848,^[3] and based on his age at his death, he was born on or about 28 Oct 1843.^[4]

Civil War Service

The 1928 history of Livermore, Maine, says that Albert Allen served during the Civil War.^[1] According to the 1890 Census of Civil War veterans, Albert Allen, then a resident of East Livermore, Maine, served as a private, in Company C of the 23rd Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment, from September 1862 to July 1853; and also in Company B of the 32nd Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment, from February 1864 to August 1865.^[5]

Marriage

Albert Allen married Mary E. Stemans (or Stimans). Their first known child was born in 1867.^[1]

Biographical Details

According to the 1928 history of Livermore, Maine:

He was a veteran of the Civil War and was a skillful machinist at Livermore Falls for many years. He was a musician of note and a prominent member of the band and orchestra.^[1]

Children

The 1900 Census says that Mary Allen, the wife of Albert Allen, was the mother of five children, four of whom were then living.^[3] The following four children are listed in the 1928 history of Livermore, Maine, with the birthdates shown,^[1] and they are shown living with Albert and Mary in the 1880 Census, with ages consistent with those birth dates.^[6] The fifth child is unknown and probably died very young. A Jack Allen appears with Albert and Mary Allen on their joint gravestone, with the dates 1869-1919.^[7] William's birth date of 1869 is confirmed by his death record, and he died in 1918,^[8] Jack may have been a nickname for William (although in census records William is shown as "Willie"); otherwise jack's relationship to Albert and Mary is unknown.

Death

Albert Allen died at East Livermore, Maine, on 10 Apr 1919, with his age at his death recorded as 75 years, 5 months, 13 days.^[4] His gravestone at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Livermore Falls, Maine, is inscribed with the dates 1843-1919.^[7]
