John enlisted as a private in Company A, 6th Alabama Infantry on September 4, 1862, at Coffee County, Alabama.
John was wounded during the Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia, which was fought May 2 - 5, 1863.
John was being paid $11.00 per month in the first quarter of 1864.
John appeared on a Hospital Muster Roll of the 3d Alabama Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, for the period ending June 30, 1863. He was admitted on June 4, 1863. The hospital was also known as 1st Div. Ala. Hosp'l.
On a muster roll for December 31, 1863, to June 30, 1864, John was reported as being on furlough (length of furlough not specified).
John was in Stuart Hospital in Richmond Virginia on July 5, 1864, with the condition listed as Vulnus Selopeticum (gunshot wound). He was transferred on July 18, 1864, to General Hospital, Howard's Grove, Richmond, Virginia. There he was furloughed for 60 days on July 22, 1864.
On a muster roll of the 31st Alabama Infantry for September and October 1864, John is marked as Absent on Wounded Furlough.
John was listed on a roll of the Invalid Corps, P.A.C.S, on December 12, 1864. An Invalid Corps was a unit of troops unable to perform regular duties but were expected to perform light duties that they were able to perform, given their wounds or illness.
John was paroled on June 16, 1865, at the end of the war. He signed an oath not to bear arms until exchanged. His description was listed as:
