Military Service

Newton enlisted in Company A, 6th Alabama Infantry as a private on September 4 or 24, 1862, in Coffee County, Alabama. Some records state the 4th and some the 24th of September.

On the muster roll for the period December 31, 1863, to June 30, 1864, Newton was listed as Absent at Hospital.[3]

The following information is from Newton's record in the Index to Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers:

Post War Life

In the 1910 census Newton (age 72) was the married head of household in Precinct 9, Coffee County, Alabama. He and his wife Mary reported that they had been married 44 years. Coffee County is a burned county and the marriage records were also lost from prior to 1877. So this is likely the best evidence we will have that Newton and Mary were wed in about 1866, not long after the war ended.

Mary had given birth to three children, of whom two were still living.

Both Newton and Mary's parents were born in Georgia.[6]
