Robert was created Earl of Menteith in 1361 and Earl of Fife in 1371. He served as Governor of Scotland from 1388 until his death in 1420. Finally, he was created Duke of Albany on April 28, 1398, Earl of Atholl September 2, 1403 and Earl of Buchan in 1406.
He married, as her fourth husband, Margaret Graham, Countess of Monteith (Papal dispensation September 9, 1361) and they had seven children. Margaret died after July 21, 1372 and before May 4, 1380.
He next married Muriella Keith, daughter of William Keith and Margaret Fraser , Papal dispensation May 4, 1380. They had four children. Muriella was dead before June 1, 1449.
While he never held the title of king he did hold equivalent power as governor.
Robert died, at age eighty, on 3 Sep 1420 at Stirling Castle. He is buried at Dunfermline Abbey, located in Fife, Scotland.

He held the office of Great Chamberlain [Scotland] between 1383 and 1407. In 1385 he made a successful raid into England. In 1388 he made another successful raid into England. He held the office of Guardian of the Realm [Scotland] between 1 December 1388 and 27 January 1399. He held the office of Regent [Scotland] in June 1406. In 1417 he again invaded England, but without success this time.
