John Stewart of Cardney and Arntullie was born about 1365. He was was the son of king Robert II of Scotland and his mistress, Marion Cardny, the sister of Robert de Cardney, Bishop of Dunkeld.
Sir John Stewart, got the charter of Arntullie 1383 and Cardneys in 1399 — the ancestral lands of his mother's family.
He studied at Paris, and the expenses of his education appear in the Exchequer Rolls of the time, as paid to his uncle Robert of Cardney.
He was alive in 1425.

John Stewart of Cardney and Arntullie was married to Jean Drummond the daughter of Sir John Drummond of Stobhall and sister of Queen Annabella.

Red Book of Scotland, Vol 9, has a chapter "Stewart of Arntully & Cardney" p. 430-442, which probably includes proof on his ancestors and descendants, and by some reports, overlaps with the next chapter: Stewart of Dalguise.
