Hi! The main goal of the Magna Carta Project is to have a badged trail to each of the 250 or so Gateway Ancestors documented by Douglas Richardson in his Magna Carta Ancestry or Royal Ancestry. (See the list of these Gateways in the table at Category:Gateway Ancestors.)

Badged members help us work toward that goal by signing on to be a Gateway Guardian and developing a trail for that Gateway (names in the table that have neither a b nor a g are available).

The project manages the profiles for the Richardson-documented Gateways (plus a few) and oodles of profiles between them and the 17 Surety Barons (out of 25) that have descendants past the 4th generation. We also manage the profiles for the 16 Illustrious Men.

Anyone* interested in any of these profiles can become an Affiliate member & join the project's Google Group to help watch over them. Affiliate members do not have participation requirements to meet (Badged members do).

 * Affiliates are encouraged to have the Pre-1700 Badge. Badged members need to have that badge and a few more requirements (see details [here]).

So... If you'd like to join as a Badged member, post an answer with the name of the Gateway you'd like to be Guardian for. If you'd like to join as an Affiliate, just add {{Member|Magna Carta Affiliate}} to your profile & send a join request to the Google Group (include your WikiTree ID).

For more info, check out the project page and the project's "Quick-Nav Index". For project-specific terms, such as "badged", see the project's Glossary.

I would lie to join to start with

Henry de Bohun

William Champion de Crespigny 2nd Baron.

Thanks Sarah! Welcome to WikiTree & the Magna Carta Project. I just approved your request to join the Google Group. For now, please add

{{Member|Magna Carta Affiliate}}

to your profile (copy/paste the coding - see details [here]).

Badged members need to have the pre-1700 badge (see more about that [here]) and select a Gateway Ancestor to be "Gateway Guardian" for.  The project works off Richardson-documented Gateways (listed [here]), who all immigrated to America. However, we've had several folks over the years express interest in Australian immigrants, but none developed a trail with primary proofs for parent/child relationships from the immigrant ancestor to a person documented by Richardson. Maybe you'll be that person! (Looking at the trail the Relationship Finder returned for you -> Bohun-7, I saw Elizabeth (Andrew) Windsor & she is documented in Richardson's Royal Ancestry - I recognized her name because I just updated her Lytton husband's profile.)

Cheers, Liz

I would like to join I did the relation finder and it said I am direct deendant to most of the I do not know how. accurate the finder is but it makess me curious

Hi! Briefly - you can't take on faith a trail returned by RF (Relationship Finder). You need to look at each profile on the trail (e.g., has it been developed, does it have reliable sources?). If you hit a profile that the Magna Carta Project has "badged", woo-hoo! From the project's Glossary:

  • a profile on a project-reviewed/approved trail between a Gateway Ancestor and a Surety Baron should have the {{Magna Carta}} badge, which adds them to the Magna Carta category

The project has 7 project boxes, but only four that are considered to be a badge - for the Illustrious Men, the Surety Barons, Gateway Ancestors in a badged trail & the {{Magna Carta}} badge for profiles between the Surety Baron & Gateway in a badged trail. All others will have a line through the Magna Carta Project logo.

To join the project as an Affiliate Member, add {{Member|Magna Carta Affiliate}} to your profile & send a join request to the project's Google Group (include your WikiTree ID in the request so we know it's you). Badged members should also join the Google Group, but they have participation requirements, including one to get the membership badge: select a profile of a Gateway Ancestor to be guardian of (see the Glossary for details about the role of Gateway Guardians, see the members page for participation requirements, and see the table on the category page for Gateway Ancestors to see which Gateways are available... select one with neither a b nor a g - b means the profile is in a badged trail & g means it already has a Guardian - if one of the listed Gateways is a direct ancestor, or even a lineal one, give me a holler, as we do make exceptions and will have more than one Guardian in those cases).

Cheers, Liz

P.S. It's not quite so complicated as it sounds, honest! Give a holler if you have questions!

Hi Jan & Welcome! To join as a Badged member, you'll need to pick a Gateway to be Guardian for - see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Gateway_Ancestors & pick a name from the table that doesn't have a b or a g, then post the name (or URL or WikiTree ID) here.

Cheers, Liz

I would like to start with Lawrence Towneley-43

 Thank you.

Thanks Caryl! Bruce-270 is one of the 5-star profiles posted as needing work in https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/949347/help-improve-magna-carta-project-five-star-profiles-december ... go ahead and post an answer there & start work on her.

To join the project as an affiliate, add {{Member|Magna Carta Affiliate}} to your profile and send a join request to https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/wikitreemagnacarta

To join as a Badged member, go to [this page] and select a Gateway that has neither b nor g to be the guardian of (post your selection here).

And Thanks!!

Thanks Liz!

Hi, I am a descendant of all of the barons.

I'd known about 9 before, but I checked again using your handy way and yep, they're all my great-grandfathers. A few shown uncertain, but the majority do not. I was stunned.

I have 5 known gateway ancestors:

William Randolph

Henry Isham

John Stratton

Anne Derehaugh

John Butler

...and some "questionable gateway ancestors". Though they seem to link just fine to the heavy hitter Plantagenets, at least, if not most of the top aristocracy like the proven ones

Mary (Newgate) Townsend

Henry Townsend

Thomas Townsend

William Claiborne

John Lakin

I'd love to help develop the "questionable" lines as I think the rest may be completed, though maybe not all the 100s of ways.

My best,

Casey

Hi Casey! I'd recommend that you start with a Gateway who is documented by Richardson's Magna Carta Ancestry. And you're right, all five Gateways you list have a guardian already - except John Butler. Since the Gateway John had no known children, you probably meant his father, who is not the Gateway.

However... we make exceptions for lineal descendants & allow a Gateway to have more than one Guardian. Looking at the options, I think the best would be Henry Isham. His profile is current, but his trail (at least the one through Margaret Badlesmere) needs re-review and updating the trail's profiles against the project's current checklist to meet project standards could serve as the second participation requirement to develop a trail.

So, once you get your pre-1700 badge, you could join the project as a Badged member as a Gateway Guardian for Henry Isham & work on his trail that goes through Margaret to meet the second participation requirement. Then if you wanted to work on developing a trail for one oft the questionable gateways you list, you'd have a bit of experience with a Richardson-documented trail. Questionable Gateways - ones not documented by Richardson - need to have clear primary proof for each parent/child relationship until the trail connects to one that is documented by Richardson, which is quite a bit more challenging. Once you've developed the trail with appropriate sources, you can add it to Base Camp as "Ready for Review" (the project no longer actively works on Questionable Gateway trails until that point).

Whew. Hope that made sense. It is WAY past my bedtime!

I'll be back online in about 8 hours or so :D

Cheers, Liz

P.S. See Help:Pre-1700 Profiles for info on getting the pre-1700 badge (which is required to join the project).

pps - the list of surety barons at Special:Relationship only includes those with descendants past the 4th generation (only 17 of 25 did; the list numbers to 15 because it includes two sets of father/son, the Bigods and the Clares).

Oh yeah, I know. The ones that have available I'm related to.

Tres cool.

Yeah, I'll work on Henry Isham. He's my 9th great-grandfather and I've known about him my entire life  Cool. :)
Great! Henry's profile doesn't actually need work but his trail does! I'll get you set up as a Gateway Guardian for his profile as soon as you get your pre-1700 badge. I posted to your profile and sent you a private message about getting started on the profile for Henry's mother even before you're all signed up.

Cheers, and Welcome!

I'm interested in links through Ann Abbott, née Mauleverer, and clearing up discrepancies in descent of Wetherills from John Lackland.
by Amy Woods G2G2 (2.1k points)

Cool! Ann (Mauleverer) Abbott is a Richardson-documented Gateway Ancestor (Magna Carta Ancestry, III:134, to the Bigods, and in Royal Ancestry, IV:62-65, to William the Conqueror).

The Magna Carta Project has two membership levels - badged and affiliate. If you want to join as a badged member, you could be a 2nd Gateway Guardian for Ann and work on a trail for her to Surety Baron Robert FitzWalter (another Gateway Guardian for her has signed up to develop her trail to the Bigods).

The trail from Ann to FitzWalter, at least according to WikiTree's Relationship Finder, goes through Robert de Grey, who connects to both FitzWalter (through a son) and John Lackland (through a daughter). If that's good for you, I'll get you set up as a badged member. If you'd rather just work on a trail from Ann to King John, you can add the Affiliate sticker to your profile -

{{Member|Magna Carta Affiliate}}

and I'll take it from there. Either way, please send request to join the project's Google Group (include your WikiTree ID so we know it's you).

And also either way - Welcome to the Magna Carta Project!

Cheers, Liz

P.S. I didn't look into the Wetherills.

Thanks, Liz!  I'd like to be a badged member and work on Ann Mauleverer, Abbott to FitzWalter, through deGrey, etc. I have some family documents mentioning those names, but I have never double checked the citations, if any, or sought out corroborative sources...any help I can get weeding through online sources will be most welcome.

I have a strange old "Sureties of the Magna Carta" chart from myGreat Grandmother Wetherill's papers which offers some marvelous leads, but again, I haven't checked the info.  Much of the research may already exist, and/or I hope to be able to contribute more, too.  I'll initiate contact with the google group-- perhaps that would be an appropriate place to share a picture of the "Sureties" chart?

Thanks so much!

Cheers,

Amy

I don't know that attachments can be sent through the Google Group, but you might want to post it somewhere... Maybe on the profile for your gr-gr-grandmother's page?

Richardson's Magna Carta Ancestry (2011) and Royal Ancestry (2013) are the project's "go-to" sources - see more on the Project Page (the [Project Sources section]) & the project's [Reliable Sources] page.

WikiTree's source page for Magna Carta Ancestry has a link to Google Books' copy (snippet view, so not all pages are included). If you're in America, many libraries have these works - check WorldCat for one near you (there's a link on the source page).
