How to create an ID from a single GEDcom record.

I absolutely understand why it is necessary, since we are creating a single common tree, to create every new ID individually and spend some time searching for and reviewing similar existing IDs (thank you, GEDCOMpare) to avoid duplicates. However, it would be terrific to have a tool to take my uploaded GEDcom data, and populate my family data for new IDs by duplicating the GEDcom data entry for the individual into the New Id form to initiate the process for any individual records that GEDCOMpare finds not potential matches. As a new function for GEDCOMpare, this would be a very helpful asset for data entry.

You haven't given GEDCOMpare a chance yet, Robert. Once you finish reviewing every "suggested match" in the file and recording each one as either a "match" or a "reject," you will see the power of this utility.

When you "match" a person in your GEDCOMpare to a profile that's already in Wikitree, it has the effect of linking that branch of the ancestry in your Gedcom to that same family branch in WikiTree. This facilitates the import process. For example, if the person is in WikiTree but doesn't have any children in WikiTree yet, you can can import the children from your Gedcom into WikiTree in a smooth process. And if you have good information about the person in your Gedcom that isn't already in Wikitree, you'll have an opportunity to add it to the existing profile.

PLEASE don't ever knowingly create a new ID# for a person who is already in WikiTree. That creates a duplicate profile that will need to be merged with the existing profile. People who deliberately create duplicate profiles are not popular around WikiTree because they create needless work and annoyance for other members. Don't do it!!!
