"Le 16 février , l'évêque avait remis cet argent , moins 800 S qu'il conservait pour l'entretien de leurs deux familles, à Riel et Lépine, en leur disant que leur fuite enlèverait tout prétexte à la violence de leur s ennemis." On the 16th of February, the bishop had handed
over the money, minus 800 livres which he kept
for the maintenance of their two families,
to Riel and Lepine, telling them that their
flight would remove any pretext for the violence
of their enemies. "With Ambrose Lépine,
Riel went to St. Paul, Minnesota,
under the name of Louis Bissonnette.

"LOUIS RIEL. Translated by L. Verrault It was in May, 1872, when Louis wrote to his sister to tell her he had been forced to go into exile in the United States, giving her some but not all of the details. She did not know of the assumed name, "Louis Bissonette" suggested to Louis by Joseph Dubuc, so he could be reached in St. Paul, Minnesota. Perhaps it was Marie's letter which hinted at the $100.00 that the family would receive each month, the same amount that was allotted to the ..."

This puzzle bugs me..I mean like really bugs me!  Why the name Louis Bissonnette?  Joseph Dubuc/Dubuque...which one???  why? because there was a Louis Bissonnette  married to Reine' Dubuc and their children included a Louis Bissonnette and a Joseph Dubuc!...and Baptism birth records...not finding them for this Louis Bissonnette or his Louis Bissonnette son...and in some records they are found within St.Paul...So...is one of these Louis Bissonnette Actually Louis Riel under his assumed name?  how long did he use the name?  what was his "relationship" with this "friend' Joseph Dubuc?  was this Joseph the brother of Reine Dubuc? or the Uncle?

The Joseph Dubuc would presumably be Sir Joseph Dubuc, who was a personal friend of Louis Riel, and also my direct ancestor.

See https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/151608560/person/202007872835/facts for the Joseph Dubuc I am referring to.

As to the Louis Bisonnette married to a Marie Reine Dubuc, I find it incredibly difficult to believe that it could have been Louis Riel for the following reasons:

1) That Louis Bissonnette apparently lived from 1759-1830, and Marie Reine Dubuc from 1770-1845, and their son Louis Bissonnette lived from 1789-1848.   Louis Riel lived from 1844-1885

2) The Bissonnettes (and Dubuc) in question all lived around Chambly, Quebec, and not St. Paul, Minnesota.  The St. Paul I've found associated to them was the birthplace of the elder Louis Bissonnette:  Baie-St-Paul, Charlevoix-Ouest, Quebec, Canada

Now, it's possible that Joseph Dubuc suggested this name in honor of his distant cousin...

Which Joseph Dubuc is Sir joseph please and thank you, i don't have a paid subscription to Ancestry so they not letting me see the page you referenced.  As for the use of name Louis Bissonette I've found the reference of this even in the the Louis Riel Museum site as well, and in other books, so just trying to find out, if he did use this alias, what  time periods and for how long, and did he have a connection to the Bissonnettes?  like did he know them? were they somehow involved with eachother, and if so for what reasons, and i do agree with you the time periods are off way to much for it to be Louis Bissonette son of Reine Dubuc and Louis Bissonette.
