Onehunga holds the distinction of being the first Fencible settlement in New Zealand.

Short-lived Zoo: Animal lovers might be surprised to know Onehunga once had Auckland's first zoo! Founded by John James Boyd near Royal Oak, the zoological garden wasn't embraced by locals due to concerns about noise and unpleasant odors. It didn't last long. [Wikipedia: Onehunga].

John James Boyd is the profile for the Onehunga Zoo owner.

Fun Fact is that I went to the school that is situated right by where the Zoo was located (And is wrongly identified as the location of the Zoo). The Zoo was located around where Boyd Ave, Royal Oak, Auckland is now just north of Royal Oak Intermediate School.
