Start Your One Place Study Here! (Jan 2024)

Are you thinking of starting a study of a place? Not sure how to get started? Check out the One Place Studies Project page.

NOTE:
If you are already a One Place Studies Project Member, you can skip to step 3 to request a new study.

  1. Be a Wiki Genealogist
  2. Click Answer below
  3. Provide us the "place" via an email to the project google group

We will then create your page, add the categories to nest your page in the correct places, and add the project template. The rest is up to you :)

If you are unsure what else to add to your page, we can lend a hand with ideas, just ask.

Remember, your Free Space Page is the front door to your One Place Study. Once opened you are walking in your ancestor's shoes!

We have an OPS Sticker which you can use on the person profiles in your study as well as a sticker for use on your profile indicating you are a member of the study.

Every Study lodged in the project puts another pin in WikiTree's Genealogy Map. Soon the village you started with overlaps with the next town and then the city beyond. Gradually a country is born.

If you are interested in being part of making WikiTree's Genealogy Map, and making an OPS, come and join us. Everyone is welcome :)

You will be awarded your badge when your OPS is nested in the project, this will give you access to our channel in WikiTree's Discord Server

I’m studying the history and genealogy of Fairville Baptist Cemetery. It’s located in Fairville, Saline, Missouri.
by Linda Simmons G2G6 (7.3k points)

Hi Linda!

Are you requesting to set up a One Place Study (OPS) in Fairville, Missouri?

Cemeteries are not set up as a One Place Study on Wikitree but the category for the cemetery is already on WikiTree: Fairville Baptist Cemetery.

Thanks for all of your work with the Cemetery and adding profiles to it's category.

Clackmannshire, Scotland
by Christopher Snowdon G2G Crew (530 points)

Hi Christopher!

Clackmannshire, Scotland has the size of a Country and that is a wee bit too large for a OPS but I can break it down into Wards and we could connect them.

Would you like me to start with setting up one Ward first?  Just let me know.

Thanks,  Sandy

Can we start with Kennet please.

Regards,

Chris

I’ve messed up. The relation I am looking for died in Kennet, Clackmannanshire
But was born in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland.
Can this be changed?
My Apologies for not double-checking my information
Regards,
Chris

Chris -

The OPS for Kennet is used for grouping together those that were born, lived, died (or however the OPS manager wants to classify) the profiles in it. The relation you are working on could easily be added to this OPS because he/she was born there.

This sticker on their profile will automatically add them to the Kennet OPS.

{{One Place Study|place=Kennet, Clackmannanshire|category=Kennet, Clackmannanshire One Place Study}}

You can also add the category for Kennet:  [[Category: Kennet, Clackmannanshire]]

For Dunfermline:  [[Category: Dunfermline, Fife]] (there is not a OPS set up for Dunfermine.... yet. :)   If you would like to also manage the Dunfermline OPS, just let me know.

If you prefer to not manage the Kennet OPS, just let me know.

Also, might I recommend our fantastic WikiTree Academy that explains what categories on profiles are.

Let me know if I can help!

Considering on starting a one place study for the local Quaker community that settled here in the 1820s (White Lick Monthly Meeting, Morgan County, Indiana). I've already been building burials into the local cemeteries in Wikitree cemeteries. I'm interested in the interconnected family relationships dating back before their migration to Indiana.  I would have access to multitudes of Quaker, court, census and other records..... OR a one place study for the home villages that my grandparents were born at in Slovakia (Latin records somewhat imaged in FamilySearch, current cemetery records appear in Virtualny Cintorin (Slovak version of findagrave) but cemetery records cease once a family stops paying for perpetual care and the plots are resold for new burials).  Suggestions, please?

Pam -

This is a hard decision!  All of your options sound great and for different reasons.

For your first OPS, I recommend starting with one to get an idea of how you want to work with it. Some WikiTree'ers want to work a certain timeframe while others track the population through decades of census records.  You can always add another one... And another one. smiley

Whichever you choose, have fun customizing it and showcasing your research.

Let us know what you decide and we can get it setup for you.

Sandy

It would probably be easier to do the local one. White Lick Monthly Meeting was established around 1826.  I figure to run the OPS for this one till 1930 which would encompass the original pioneers  and their children..  There were several Monthly Meetings  set off from White Lick as well as several preparative meetings.  It's interesting to see how all the people from White Lick were interconnected to the other four area Monthly Meetings as they all came from the same area in and around Guilford County, North Carolina from those monthly meetings.

Are there any other OPS for Quaker meetings that this could linl up with?
I just found there is already a category for White Lick Monthly Meeting within the Morgan County, Indiana, Religious Congregations in Quaker Meetings.  Could this relgious congregation be considered a OPS for White Lick Monthly Meeting?  If not, can you create a OPS for this friends meeting, please?  Thank you.
Pam - Let me send you an email tomorrow and let's figure it out.
Sure!  I am gone most of the day tomorrow and working on taxes in the evening.

I have a OPS on the neighborhood of Roosevelt Park in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I started a OPS page here. We have a blog where we post Census indexes, city directory indexes, etc. We will use WT profiles as a way to share genealogical research in a way that it's easier for possible descendants to find more information. The OPS page will also be a way to organize the profiles as well.

by Colleen Jousma G2G6 Mach 1 (13.1k points)
Colleen -

Your page looks great!

Would you like me to add it to WikiTree's One Place Study Project?

The Project sets up the OPS pages with links and stickers that are coded into a study page along with adding it to our Project.  If you'd like me to convert it to a WT OPS, it is an easy process.

I'll send you an email with details.

Sandy
Sure. I can add you as one of the leads or whatever the WT lingo is so that you have control over the free space page, too. I would like it to be included in the project so that there are more places that our OPS can be found. I look forward to your email.

I already have two OPS, but I have a small project on the war memorial in my church (only 17 names). Could this please be converted into an OPS. (St Mark's Darlington War Memorial)

Its Plus Code is GFX3+C8 Darlington which converts to Lat/Long 54.548562,-1.546687

What an amazing tribute page!  Nicely done.

At this time, Cemeteries are not being added as a One Place Study.  But I do have some helpful information:

If you are interested in doing a page about a monument or memorial, the Cemeterist Project (see Cemetery Pages) would be the place for this, and there is a category structure for them here: Monuments and Memorials

A question about One Place Studies - does it have to be someplace you have or can/will visit? I ended up recently sourcing a bunch of profiles in a small English town in Devon called Buckfastleigh. This place interests me for some reason although I doubt that I will ever get across the ocean to visit it in person.
by Liza Gervais G2G6 Pilot (395k points)
Liza -

You can work on a One Place Study that interests you in any manner.  Being in the location or even traveling to it is not required.  As you get to know more and more about the location, maybe another WikiTree'er or local finds your OPS and offers to help.  Buckfastleigh looks really quaint.

Let me know what you decide.

Sandy

Can a One Place Study be a War Memorial? The one I have in mind is the Rabaul Montevideo Maru Memorial, Blanche Bay, Papua New Guinea. It has 856 names of Australian soldiers that were drowned when the ship, Montevideo Maru was sunk in 1942

The One Place Studies Project does not set up studies for cemeteries or war memorials. But, there is a great opportunity to still work on these special individuals on WikiTree.

Check out this section on our Project's Home page for details.

Let me know if I can be of any help.
