Brouwer Genealogy Database - Accessing it in 2023 and 2024

Chris Chester's Brouwer Genealogy Database is a high-quality online resource for New Netherland. It is cited as a source in well over 1000 WikiTree profiles (mostly for New Netherland people and their descendants) and it continues to be a useful research resource.

Recently, there have been two issues accessing this content. First, URLs like http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~brouwergenealogydata/index.htm now return errors. That's easily fixed by removing "ancestry" from the URL; the preferred URL for the site is now https://freepages.rootsweb.com/~brouwergenealogydata/genealogy/ , but that URL doesn't give access to very much content because the main index pages on the Brouwer Genealogy Database stopped working properly in 2023 when the most recent Rootsweb reconfiguration began.

Many WikiTree citations to this source include URLs only for the main index page, with the expectation that the user would search or use indexes to find an entry that is identified by title. That was important when the content was being revised, but content has been frozen since 2015, so deeplink URLs will remain stable, but we have all these citations that rely on indexes that no longer work.

I have worked out how to continue to access the content.

To find content, go to the archived Name Index at https://web.archive.org/web/20190516213211/http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~brouwergenealogydata/genealogy/master_index.htm and "hover over" the individual entries to see (and copy) the generated URL for an archive page, then use that URL to identify the page on the live site. For example, hovering over the entry for "Johnson, Sophia to Keck, Seward" will show you https://web.archive.org/web/20190516213211/http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~brouwergenealogydata/genealogy/i80.htm . That page is not in the archive (unless it was added recently), but removing the early part of the URL and keeping  the part that begins "http" will give you http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~brouwergenealogydata/genealogy/i80.htm . Enter that URL in your browser to be taken to the live page https://freepages.rootsweb.com/~brouwergenealogydata/genealogy/i80.htm . On that page, you can scroll through the alphabetized last names to find the entries of interest.

When citing this source, I suggest using deeplinked URLs for a specific entry (example: https://freepages.rootsweb.com/~brouwergenealogydata/genealogy/p427.htm#i110762 is the deeplink for Andries Jeuriaenszen) so that the user has an easier time finding the content.

Wow! Thanks for working this out,
Subsequent to posting this message, I've added several name index pages from the Brouwer Genealogy to the Wayback Machine. The Wayback Machine and Rootsweb both limit the rate at which this can be done, so I've added only a small fraction of the total number.
