Which internet innovator are you most closely connected to?

It's the anniversary of the introduction of the World Wide Web, so we're looking at some innovators in the internet field in the Connection Finder, starting with the inventor of the WWW, Tim Berners-Lee.

Here are other innovators who have helped create the internet as we know it:

Which of these is closest to you on our single family tree? If you're one of the 30.4 million of us who are connected to each other on our big tree, you can check with the Connection Finder.

In addition to the above and our many Featured Connections, you can check your connections to any category on WikiTree, such as Computer Scientists and Computer History. Click the green MyConnections button in the upper right hand corner of the category page.

Let us know how you're related below. If you want to share your connection on social media with cousins and friends, click the "get shareable image" below the results, e.g. Oliver Cromwell and Tim Berners-Lee. Then just upload it along with the URL of your direct connection. (Please refrain from sharing your connection on the featured profiles themselves, though. It clutters conversations on research and collaboration. Thanks!)

Help us find and improve the profiles for next week's London Westminster and Middlesex feature.

Remarkable that more than one answer explicitly mentions this being the first time with no cousins. Could it be that those closely connected to the internet are not connected to the tree by blood?!? ;-)
Oliver, the only profile with a significant number of connections this time is William Thomson.

William Thomson: 2,308 connections
Claude Shannon: 166 connections
Raymond Tomlinson: 155 connections
Timothy Berners-Lee: 124 connections
Dennis Ritchie: 75 connections
Steve Jobs: 67 connections
Marian Croak: 59 connections
Larry Page: 50 connections
Jack Dorsey: 49 connections
Elizabeth Feinler: 28 connections
Douglas Engelbart: unknown connections

Thanks, Mike, for those statistics!

Douglas Engelbart should have about 270 connections like his daughter, as on his parents‘ side, no connection is further than 6 degrees (i.e. all those connections would also count among his daughter’s CC7), and on his wife’s side, he would have the same number of connections as his daughter, and his daughter does not have any further CC1 connections apart from her two parents.

My closest connection is William Thomson at 16 degrees .  Every one else ranges from 23 to 33 degrees.  Though I do live with an IT guru who was on the Internet long before it became public domain.

I am not related to any of the internet innovators.

Here is my relationship by degrees:

19º Douglas Englebard; 20º William Thomson; 21º Claude Shannon; 22º Dennis Ritchie; 23º Marian Croak; 24º Raymond Tomlinson; 25º Larry Page; 26º Timothy Berners-Lee and Elizabeth Feinler; 28º Jack Dorsey and Steve Jobs.

Look like there are a few of us without cousin relationships...likely a dearth of connections.

The only names I recognised offhand are Steve Jobs, & Sir Tim Berners-Lee. Tim B-L came up with the World Wide Web, but there had to already be the Internet in place on which he could hang his innovation. The Internet grew from the U.S. military system called 'Arpanet' when it was realised that connecting computers would have immense effects in the future. The UK, USA & - I think - Germany collaborated at a time when such a Net would have use in the Cold War. In the USA, the team at Stanford University worked with the team at London University, one of whom was my late cousin Dr Adrian Victor Stokes, whose brief was concerned with the implementation of E-mail in the UK, as well as the invention of a common computer language. There is a plaque on a wall at Stamford that lists the pioneers involved, & Adrian's name is there. He was disabled from birth with Spina Bifida, but there was nothing wrong with his brain! He died in April 2020, aged (almost) 75.
