Hi Aleš

I have a new Editbot request. It only involves hundreds of records this time, so I hope it meets minimum requirements for Editbot involvement.

Please replace both

http://www.bdm.vic.gov.au/home/family+history/

http://www.bdm.vic.gov.au/home/family+history/search+your+family+history/

with

https://my.rio.bdm.vic.gov.au/efamily-history/-
That is just a search engine. I see no point in linking to empty search pages. I will look in details tomorrow.

I agree with Mark that the two obsolete URLs should be replaced, but not with his suggestion for the replacement. As Aleš says,

https://my.rio.bdm.vic.gov.au/efamily-history/-

is a search. It is on an internal server my.rio, and has a peculiar - character on the end. Victoria BDM have changed their search software in the past, and could do so again, making that link obsolete as well.

The actual link corresponding to the two old ones with plus signs is

https://www.bdm.vic.gov.au/research-and-family-history/search-your-family-history

and that is a better choice of replacement. It gives information about scope and availability of VicBDM records, and contains a prominent link to the less informative search page near the top.

I endorse Jim’s comment.
Lovely! Thanks again.

Like you did.

I checked the domain and also links to pdf files http://www.friendsofbattyelibrary.org.au/files/A.pdf changed. I will include those in the corrections.

The BOT is running now. cca 6920 profiles will be updated.
Thank you!!

you’ll find a problem with the .pdf files though. They are no longer A.pdf, B.pdf, but (random string of letters and numbers).pdf

I’d been considering replacing those links with a higher level URL.
I left that letter intentionally in case those links change again. That way I will know which URL is for which letter.
Awesome! Thank you!

I notice that the birth location on Beasley-6396 of भारत (which is India written in Hindi) is still producing a number of suggestions. I'm not sure if my post at https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1581936/location-written-in-local-language-produces-suggestions might have been missed, or whether there is a problem trying to stop the suggestions being produced? Although it is debatable whether the location is actually appropriate for that particular profile, I think in general it should be a valid location that does not produce suggestions.

That g2g post was missed by me.

I stand by valid location being an english one or in local language. But not any other language. It is up to computers to compensate for भारत = India when doing searches.

I have implemented this for some coutries, that I was asked for. See https://plus.wikitree.com/default.htm?report=srch1&Query=country%3DJapan+not+location%3DJapan

It seems there are only 8 profiles using भारत https://plus.wikitree.com/default.htm?report=srch1&Query=location%3D%E0%A4%AD%E0%A4%BE%E0%A4%B0%E0%A4%A4 but that is no reason not to support it.

Here is the location's table. https://plus.wikitree.com/function/WTShowTable/Table.htm?table=Countries&filter=IND

Hi Aleš

It was suggested in a different thread that I ask here, so I've copied a prior comment... FYI this is pretty low stakes, but anyway... thanks.

This may not affect many if any profile managers but me, but in my suggestions I get Error 961 - Invalid Domain on archive.org links that include an IP address in the URL string... e.g. on this profile Margaret (Brackett) Connors, I get the error due to the presence of this URL:

https://web.archive.org/web/20230425231244/http://66.241.235.145/interm/search_view.cfm?IntermID=47440

(Unfortunately, there is no other alternative source link for this info).

Is there any way to exclude cases like these from showing up under Error 961?

You can set them as false suggestions. I do have a solution for this problem prepared, but I didn't turn it on for now. Maybe I should.
Thank you!

How clever can Editbot be at correcting links

For example there are over 1,000 links similar to this one:

http://www.bellsite.id.au/gdbtree/HTMLFiles/HTMLFiles_102/P13715.html

which is now this one:

https://www.bellsite.id.au/gdbtree/HTMLFiles/HTMLFiles_116/P13715.html

You can see three digits only are different in the URL, however they have not changed in a consistent manner across all the various links, but the component after the final slash has remained the same, as well as before the second last slash.

It can be as clever as I want it to be.

Was that a one time change or does it change every few months? I checked and it seems the files haven't chabged since september 2020.

I could extract all pages from index files https://www.bellsite.id.au/gdbtree/index_A.html to https://www.bellsite.id.au/gdbtree/index_Z.html

I will work on it tomorrow. It is 3am here.

and pair it with the P number.
Sorry, I’m not sure how often it changes. It’s not a source I use myself.
I programmed editbot to correct the links. It is running now.

If this will change again in the future,

mention my reference: WT_www_bellsite_id_au
This has now completed. 1273 profiles were corrected. Here is the log file
