Source for origins and parents Capt Richard Betts (1613-1713) Newtown, Long Island?

The profile of Capt Richard Betts (project protected by New Netherlands) gives his origins as Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England stating "all authorities agree" and then cites Savage. I don't find Betts or his wife's Chamberlain family in Savage (they should be in Vol 1). Other places which give this point of origin don't appear to cite any primary or strong secondary sources. The parents were attached to the profile in 2016 based on an entirely unsourced Geni profile which is linked from the father profile.

Capt Betts is a 10th ggf and for several decades I lived less than a half mile from the Betts home (no longer stands). I've not before looked at the commonly seen parentage and I'm struggling to find something that substantiates what is seen.

Edit: The History of Queens County, New York 1683-1882 (p 346 in my edition) has an excellent profile of Capt Betts but does not speculate on his origins. It does give significant information regarding his outfoxing Peter Stuyvesant.

A Research Notes section has been added with commentary on given origins (there appears to be no documentation only a general theory he was from Hemel-Hempstead "or the vicinity").

The earliest attestation for this rumor that I have found is in Riker's Annals of Newtown, published 1852 : https://archive.org/details/annalsofnewtowni00rike/page/373/mode/1up?view=theater

Riker is not as definitive about it as the Scudder genealogy:

"Concerning the ancestry of Capt. Richard Betts, the progenitor of the Newtown family, nothing positive has been ascertained, though it is probable that he was descended from a family of this name, located at Withenden, in Suffolk co., England, as early as the fifteenth century. He himself is believed to have come from Hemel-Hempstead in Hertfordshire, or its vicinity."

Yes, Annals of Newtown is the earliest I have found (Research Notes on profile). And, the Scudder, as far as I can tell, is giving a possibility based only on the surname being found in Withenden quite early.
