Can I skip generations to build my tree starting farther back?

Hey all.  Im here to learn about some disputed lineage in the 1600's.  Can I skip the more recent generations and get the 1700 ones to upload and be able to then continue with my older research?  *One issue is that I have to resolve an unresponsive profile manager for my grandmother before I can keep going but don't want to stall out this early.

Well, the short answer is "yes". I suspect if you're around here long enough, you plan around those types of things, so that you can work on another branch or another set of profiles while you await that response, or pursue the Unresponsive process. But if you wanted to leapfrog generations to enter a set of profiles while you work out some access or dispute situations, I don't see any reason why not. There's no rule against it, other than the challenge of remembering that you set up a small isolated island of profiles that you need to hopefully reconnect to the larger group before they are forgotten.

One thing to keep in mind, you need to self-qualify to work on pre-1700 profiles. It is easy to do. Read more here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles

To add some points to Scott's answer:

  • It sounds as if you may need to be pre-1700 certified (edited to add: as Peggy said while I was typing).
  • There is a New Person form (available from the Add menu) to add a profile for someone who is not an immediate relative of anyone with an existing profile.
  • The further back in time you go, the more likely it is that profiles already exist. Please be particularly careful not to create duplicate profiles.

Ah thanks for pointing that out about the pre-1700's.  I have done GEDCOMpare for some of my list and yes have found several (although did find discrepancies that I will want to sort out the root of).  I will fill that form out very soon.

Upside, I was able to figure out who the profile manager was IRL (we are relatives and I messaged them directly) so now I dont need to wait on those profiles.
Make sure to do a 'search' for relatives before adding them.  Sometimes the locations may not be exactly the same, as well as the brithdate, so searching, sort the results by birthdate and review the list might find a person.
