Biography

John White was born in Kent, England.

John, the eldest son of William White and Jemima née Coppins, was born in about 1832 and baptised on 29 April 1832 at the Church of All Saints, Maidstone, Kent, England. ^[1]

The 1841 census shows him living with his parents, his brother William and his sister Jemima in Upper Stone Street, Maidstone. ^[2]

In 1851, described as a wheelwright, he was living with Elizabeth Beale as his housekeeper, her child Emily and her sister Emma in the household of William Reeves in St Faith's Green, Maidstone, Kent. Elizabeth Beale was almost certainly the Elizabeth Brown whom John later married, and Emily, later known as Emma, was John's child. ^[3]

John married Elizabeth Brown on 18 June 1854 at Holy Trinity Church, Maidstone. ^{[4] [5]}

The 1861 census shows John and Elizabeth living at 96 Wharf Lane, Maidstone, with their children, Elizabeth, aged 8, George, aged 7, Emma, aged 3, Mary A, aged 2, and Luke, aged 6 months. ^[6]

In 1871, at 35 Wharf Lane the family has increased by four children, Thomas, aged 8, Christopher, aged 6, Frederick, aged 3, and Jemima, aged 2. There is also a boarder, Helen Tanner, aged 22. ^[7]

In 1881, at 14 Hope Street, John's wife Elizabeth is not present, but he is shown as married. The rest of the household shows Thomas, aged 18, Christopher, aged 16, Frederick, aged 12 and Jemima, aged 11. There are two boarders, Absalom and Henry Sandford. ^[8]

After Elizabeth´s death John lived as husband and wife with Matilda Rosetta Roots Baldwin. The 1891 census shows them living with Matilda's daughters Minnie, aged 7, and Edith, aged 15 months, both described as John's daughters and with the surname White. Matilda was aged 30. Also living in the house at 14 Hope Street were Matilda's sister Susan Baldwin, aged 12, and John's granddaughter Emily Easton, aged 11. ^[9]

After Matilda´s death he married her sister, Emily Ellen Baldwin, in 1895 in Maidstone. ^[10]

The 1901 census shows John still living at 14 Hope Street, but now with his new wife, Emily, aged 26, and his children, Edith, aged 11, John, aged 10, Ethel, aged 8, William, aged 5, Margaret, aged 3, and Emily, aged 5 months. ^[11]

He passed away on 10 April 1905 in Maidstone. ^[12][13]
