Elizabeth was born in about 1830, probably in London, the daughter of Mary Ann Isabella Brown, and probably the daughter of George Charles Beale.
The 1841 census shows Elizabeth, named as Elizabeth Beal, living with Elizabeth Brown aged 70, assumed to be her maternal grandmother, in George Street, Southwark, Surrey.
[1]
In 1851 she was living under the name Elizabeth Beale in St Faiths Green, Maidstone, Kent, England. She was shown as unmarried, aged 19, and a worker in cane. Her birthplace was said to be London. She was the housekeeper of John White in a house shared with William Reeves, and had a baby named as Emily Beale, born in Maidstone.
[2]
Elizabeth had a daughter, Elizabeth Jane, who was registered as Elizabeth Jane White, in 1852.
[3]
She married John White on 18 June 1854 at Holy Trinity Church, Maidstone, Kent.
[4]
In the parish record, Elizabeth Brown's father's name has been inserted as "George Beale" and his profession as "Chairmaker", but both have been crossed out. John was said to be aged 23 and Elizabeth was said to be 24. Both were resident in Maidstone and unmarried. John was a wheelwright and the son of William, also a wheelwright. The marriage was witnessed by Edward and Emma Bury.
[5]
The 1861 census shows John and Elizabeth living in Wharf Lane, Maidstone with their children, Elizabeth, aged 8, George, aged 7, Emma, aged 3, Mary A, aged 2, and Luke, aged 6 months.
[6]
In 1871 the family, which now included Thomas, aged 8, Christopher, aged 6, Frederick, aged 3, and Jemima, aged 2, was still living in Wharf Lane, Maidstone.
[7]
In the 1881 census, Elizabeth is not shown living with her family.
[8]
Elizabeth died on 23 April 1888 at 14 Hope Street, Maidstone. The cause of death was a carbuncle of the neck and Elizabeth was said to be aged 61. Her son George John was present at her death and informed the registrar.
