WikiTree Challenge
The WikiTree Challenge is our biggest ongoing community event. Every other week, a team of WikiTreers collaborates to grow seven degrees of connections for a special genealogist guest star. Here's how to participate.
Big Annual Events
These 72-hour marathon challenges are our community's biggest events.
Connect-a-Thon (July 2024)
The Connect-a-Thon is a marathon focused on adding missing family members to existing profiles. The goal is to decrease the number of profiles that are not connected to our big tree.
Source-a-Thon (October 2024)
The Source-a-Thon is a sourcing marathon with thousands of dollars worth of door prizes donated from around the genealogy community. Our goal: find sources for as many Unsourced Profiles as possible.
The Source-a-Thon takes place the beginning of October to kick off Family History Month.
Ongoing Challenges
These are challenges that you can participate in right now.
12 Months of Photos
Each month there is a new theme posted in G2G. To participate, you share a photo that you feel ties into the month's theme. For updates, follow 12_photos.
16 For 16
To help celebrate WikiTree's 16th Anniversary in 2024, we are having a year-long event: 16 For 16!
The goal is to complete 16 of the missions over the course of the year. Participants who reach that milestone will receive a "16 For 16" sticker they can add to their profile to show off their accomplishment. See here for more details.
52 Weeks of Ancestors
Each week there is a new theme posted in G2G. To participate, you review and improve one profile that fits the theme. For updates when the theme comes out, follow 52_ancestors.
Bio Builders Challenge
It is easy to get in a groove creating profiles, tracing ancestries, adding sources, and making connections on WikiTree, and forget to build profiles to their fullest potential.
Many profiles on WikiTree, even from our best members, have sources but no human substance. What do the sources tell us? What has your research revealed about the person? Who were they? The Biography section of a profile is an opportunity to tell the person's story.
The Bio Builders Challenge is a personal growth challenge to create meaningful biographies.
A new challenge opens every month so there is always one that's open. Join the group now. follow biobuilders.
Connectors Challenge
The Connectors Challenge is about linking unconnected profiles to our "big tree." A new challenge starts every month.
Canada Challenges
The Canada Project runs multiple challenges. Follow the tag canada for updates. There are new ones that open every month.
Data Doctors Challenge
Every week we focus on a different type of problem on our shared tree. It's one that has been identified by Aleš Trtnik through his WikiTree+ deep data analyses — the problems are identified mechanically, but need to be investigated thoughtfully by a genealogist.
See the Data Doctors Challenge page for what we're doing this week, and then join in! Everyone who helps appears in the leaderboard. The participant who does the most that week gets a badge — and we all win with a cleaner shared tree. For updates, follow data_doctors_challenge.
Friday Date Night
This is an informal challenge every other week where participants work on finding dates for profiles that don't have any. See WikiTree Friday Date Night for instructions. For updates, follow friday_date_night.
GEDI Challenge
The primary goals of the GEDCOM Improve (GEDI) Challenge are:
- To improve profiles so that they are properly structured, sourced, free of suggestions, and not duplicated elsewhere.
- To identify profiles for further work by adding applicable maintenance categories.
For updates, follow gedi_challenge. A new challenge opens every month.
Germany Connectors
Help connect and improve profiles of German notables.
For updates follow germany. A new challenge opens every month.
Integrators Challenge
The primary goals and tasks of the Integrators Challenge are:
- Create profiles from unanswered G2G questions.
- Answer unanswered questions. (For the challenge, these need to be from at least two months from the current date and earlier.)
- Connect questions to existing WikiTree profiles.
Some months may feature specific tasks to accomplish these. See the Integrators Challenge Project Page for more info. For updates follow integrators_challenge. A new challenge opens every month.
Link Builders Challenge
WikiTree has pledged to stay 100% free forever. This means we have to keep costs ultra-low, and can't spend money on advertising. Link building is a way to spread the word about WikiTree and bring in new members. It's also great "cousin bait." The Link Builders Challenge focuses on adding links to sites like Find-A-Grave, Wikipedia, FamilySearch, IMDB and fandom sites.
For updates follow link_builders. A new challenge opens every month.
Notables Challenges
The Notables Project runs two challenges each month. One focuses on Sports Notables and the other focuses on TV Notables.
For updates follow notables. New challenges open every month.
Profile Makeover Challenge
Show your skills doing what we do best: adding dashes of love to WikiTree. Choose a neglected profile and give it a new and improved look. Show us your creativity!
For updates follow profile_makeover. A new challenge opens every month.
Sourcerers Challenge
The Sourcerers Challenge is a friendly competition to see how many profiles we can clear from the Unsourced Profiles category in a month. Everyone who participates get the Sourcerers badge. Those who tally the most by the end of the month get the Sourcerers Challenge Winner badge.
See the Sourcerers Challenge page for a link to the current G2G challenge post or see sourcerers. A new challenge opens every month.
Saturday Sourcing Sprint
If it's Saturday, you can also participate in our Saturday Sourcing Sprint. These are mini versions of the Sourcerers Challenge that run for 24 hours.
US Black Heritage
The US Black Heritage Project runs multiple challenges. Follow the tag us_black_heritage for updates. New challenges open every month.
We Will RAWK You Challenge
The We Will RAWK You Event is an ongoing two-month event. During the first month we take nominations for WikiTreers who could benefit from having branches of their tree researched and WikITree volunteers to help work on those branches. Five individuals (RAWKees) are randomly chosen from the nominees and in the second month, the volunteers (RAWKers) work on the research. Become a RAWKer! Follow the tag we_will_rawk_you for udpates.
Intermittent Challenges
These challenges may not be open right now, but if not, a new one will be starting soon. Follow challenges or a specific project tag to hear when new challenges open.
