William Brown was born on 29 November 1877 at Goorombat, Benalla, and prior to the Great War was a farmer at Samaria. He was a creamery manager when he enlisted on 18 March 1916 at Wangaratta, and named his father as next-of-kin. He saw active service during the war and then was on a soldier settlement block at Yea after the war till the late 1930s. He then sold this and went into the sawmill at Yea until about 1951 when he became ill and retired, dying in 1952. He married at the tail end of the depression to Alice Ashley, the daughter of Thomas Ashley, a farmer of Bright and formerly of Chiltern. In 1943 –1954 William Brown farmer and Alice Florance May Brown lived at Yea. [electoral rolls] In 1877 Alice lived by herself in Seymour. They had three children: Elizabeth, Margaret and Robert.
