Biography

Richard, named after his maternal grandfather, was born on 12 November 1875, kept on the farm at Samaria after his parents died and ran the 200 acres or so as a mixed farm with cows, bullocks, a few sheep and milking cows. He married Ellen Louisa Ridout from Goorambat on 8 December 1920. Richard and Ellen lived at Samaria in 1922 to 1949 [Electoral Roll] He used to ride into town with the spring dray loaded with the pigs, etc. to sell and stayed the night with his brother Ted. He also worked on the roads, making dams , etc. to supplement the farm income. The death took place at the Bush Nursing Hospital on Saturday, of Mrs. Ellen Louisa Brown, of Samaria, whose burning accident was reported In last issue. The late Mrs. Brown who was 67 years of age, was a daughter of the late Edward and Sarah Ridout, of Goorambat, where she was born. She was married at Benalla 31 years ago to Mr. Richard Brown, who survives her, as well as one son, Henry, and one daughter, Florence, for whom sincere sympathy is felt in their loss. The late Mrs. Brown was very popular through out the district, being a good neighbor and kind friend. [Benalla Ensign, 21 June 1851] The death at Benalla of Mr. Richard Brown of Samaria, at the age of 78. He was a son of the late James and Mary Maria Brown, and was born at Goorambat. He went to the Samaria with his famly when young. He was married at Benalla 35 years ago to Mary Maria Ridout, who predeceased him two years ago. He is mourned by one son, James, and a daughter, Florence, both of Samaria. The late Mr. Brown was liked for his many good qualities and a large circle of friends regret his passing. [Benalla Ensign, 23 July 1953] They had two children: James Henry and Florence Maud who kept the farm after their parents died, Nellie on 16 June 1951 and Richard on 19 July 1953 at Benalla, until 1982 when James died.
