Biography

Lewis Jr. was born May 5, 1751 in Dinwiddie County, Colony of Virginia of father Lewis Green and mother Elizabeth Lauderdale.

His occupation was tanner (source unknown).

1776 Project
Private Lewis Green Jr. served with Washington County Militia, Virginia Militia during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
Lewis Green Jr. is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A047198.

In 1776 he served In the American Revolution in Russell County, Virginia, Shelby's Troops. [1][2]

He died Jun. 10, 1836 in Harlan County, Kentucky, (A marker is on Harlan Road.) [3] [4]

Lewis J. "Rev War" Green, Jr is the son of Lewis "Bear" Green. Here's why:

1) Lewis "Rev War" Green, Jr. enlisted in Spring of 1776 and began his Rev War Service at Blackamore's/Blackmore's Fort.[2]. Lewis "Rev War" Green may have already been serving, at or near Fort Blackmore, to protect those living on the frontier.
2) Lewis "Bear" Green, Sr. [IV] left on a hunting excursion from Blackamore's/Blackmore's Fort in 1774 when he was mauled by a Bear.
3) Daniel Boone was the commander at Blackamore's/Blackmore's Fort at the time of the Mauling. [5] [6][7] Boone's version of the story was later retold by W. L. Twitty of Brittain, NC and published on 16 Feb 1881 (Draper number 7DD109). [8]
4) Zachariah Green, while living in Davidson and Sumner County's in TN, relays the story of his father, Lewis Green, being mauled by a Bear to Capt. John Carr whose 1852 Sumner County, Tennessee account is published (Draper number 6XX99).
5) Zachariah Green was the only child named in Lewis "Bear" Green's Will and Zachariah was involved in probating the estate.
6) Lewis Green Jr, and Zachariah Green are listed, on 30 Jun 1777, as members of the militia at Moore's fort. This suggests they are brothers. Also listed are Patrick and Samuel Porter and Robert and Charles Kilgore.

It is highly unlikely that Lewis J. "Rev War" Green, Jr was the Lewis Green who served in the War of 1812 as he would have been more than 60 years of age. His birth date being given by Berry Cawood in his Rev War Pension as 1751.

Lewis J. "Rev War" Green, Jr would have been much too young to be part of the French and Indian War although it is possible he may have been a participant in Lord Dunmore's War.

Documentation reveals that there were 2 Lewis Green's living in Southwest Virginia between 1750 and 1800: Lewis "Bear" Green Sr, who was originally thought to be the Revolutionary War Patroit, and Lewis J. "Rev War" Green, Jr. No others Lewis Green's have yet been found in the records in this area.

Research Notes

Timeline by April a descendant of Moses and Elizabeth (Green) Foley.

Dinwiddie: The profile text says he was born in 1751 in Dinwiddie County, but Dinwiddie County was not created until 1752. The Birth Place datafield previoiusly had "Dinwiddie, Culpeper County", which never existed (Dinwiddie is the county seat of Dinwiddie County, which was created from Prince George County). A comment on the profile attached as his father says that "He was also from Dinwiddie" (implying both Lewis b 1710 and Lewis b c1724 discussed in the profile were both from Dinwiddie). The DAR record for this Lewis has Virginia (no county) for birth location and Washington County as his residence, so I removed the category for Dinwiddie County, Virginia from this profile. His pension application states that he was in Russell County when he enlisted but does not say where he was born (there is a blank for the response to that question). Although no evidence is given for where he was born, I left this profile in the Dinwiddie County, Virginia Colony category.

I am searching for evidence that would be acceptable to the Sons of the American Revolution establishing Mary Rutha Green Wilson as the daughter of Lewis Green Jr and Esther Kilgore. He did not list family members on his Revolutionary War pension application, and only a couple of his sons and their family in his will.

This Timeline is in pretty good shape. I still have a good bit of work to do on other Lewis Green's.

I believe there is an extra Lewis Green here. Judith Parsons Smith and Ardath Jo Green were trying to work-out the issue with mixing-up Jr and Sr regarding Rev War Patriot. Two Lewis Green's did not die en route to Cumberland Settlement among other things. Anyway thanks for your patience and I enjoy collaborating. Cheers.

I have moved this Lewis Green to his correct parents. He is now connected to Lewis Green IV who lived on the Clinch River in the area that is now Dungannon, Virginia.

see dad's profile (Green-15176) - I think the information there may be for this Lewis. I posted the following note on his profile:

a note in his DAR public record says service previously recorded as his was actually his son's (Lewis Jr) - see http://services.dar.org/Public/DAR_Research/search_adb/?action=full&p_id=A047197

I think that's the same pension application as at http://revwarapps.org/s31080.pdf ("S31090" on other link must be a typo, as an application with that number on this site shows it to be for someone else with no mention of Lewis)
