Biography

Biography by Fred South 2011
Curtis Corwin Green
Curt was born January 24, 1874, in Mifflin township, Franklin County, OH.[1][2] He married Jane Vernier in Nemaha County, NE, on December 13, 1898.[3] He farmed for a time and then ran a store in Brock, NE. The store was a combination of groceries on one side and clothing on the other. They also built a very fine house in Brock for about $10,000, which in those days was a lot of money. It had the kitchen in the basement with a dumbwaiter to bring the food up, reminiscent of Jefferson's Monticello. The store and later the house burned. The house was rebuilt. The house had tile siding, which had to be covered because of the fire damage. He had no insurance on the store and little on the house. He had gone in to the store business with another fellow. William Leonard South warned him to watch guy, but Curt had complete faith in him; he shouldn't have, for Curt ended up being cheated.
He later moved to Grand Ronde, OR, where he raised turkeys. He first made a trip there so see friends and liked the area. He died there on September 6, 1949.
Ervin South found a 12-gauge shotgun, which Curt left in a barn after one of his moves. In the 1950s Donnie Ray South, Ervin's son, still had the gun. It had CCG carved on the stock. The author remembers shooting it one time while rabbit hunting outside of Miles City. What a recoil! It was called a "Zulo."
Curt had diabetes and when it grew worse the doctor told him to go to Florida, eat raw vegetables, raw fruit and perhaps fish, but only boiled. He bought a Model T truck chassis and had a fellow build a small house on the back. The engine had to be started by cranking, but he couldn't do it (because of the illness I assume), so whenever he stopped someone else had to crank. About 1922 or 1923 he came back from Florida with the diabetes gone, having lived in his "motor home" all that time. He was about 43 when he returned and lived to be 75 years old. The last Vern South saw Curt was after he (Curt) had walked to town in a new pair of overalls only to slip and fall into the mud. He was a mess.
Curt and Jane seem to have been Methodist while in Nebraska, but became Seventh-day Adventist while in Oregon. Jane was born in 1878.

Records summary by Steven Lake 2018.
The Family Bible fo Ephraim and Malinda Asbell Green gives Curt's birth as 24 Jan/Jun? 1874. His WWI draft registration also states his birth date as 24 Jan 1874. A certified copy of his Ohio delayed birth certificate states that his birth was on 7 January 1874.[4] Note that the 24 Jan 1874 date from the Green Family Bible and the draft registration is being used both here and on Find-a-Grave.com burial memorial in spite of the delayed birth record and the year 1873 on his gravestone inscription.
Curt was living in Richland township of Fairfield county, Ohio, in the household of Ephraim Green when recorded in the 1880 Census.[5] His family moved from Ohio to Nebraska about 1886
After Curt and Jane were married in 1898, they lived with her mother in Lafayette precinct of Nemaha county and were there in 1900.[6] They were living in Lafayette precinct with no children in 1910.[7]
He registered for the draft on 12 September 1918 in Auburn. The record gives his date of birth, says that he was married, self employed as a farmer in Brock, his height was tall, build medium, eyes blue and hair brown.[8]
They were living in Brock in 1920 and a neice and nephew were with them. Curt's sister, Roxanne died in 1905 and her husband, Robert Shirley, could not care for Mearl and baby Robert. This record does not show the oldest boy, William "Mac" McKinley, age 23, who went to south Dakota.[9] Curt's occupation was farmer in that record. The kids later went to other relatives, Leonard and Nora South. In 1930 Curt and Jane were farming in Washington township of Nemaha county and Curt's brother, Charlie, was living with them.[10] Curt and Jane were living with Jane's sister, Adell Lozeron, in Lafayette precinct in 1940. Adell's husband, Robert, had died the year before. Curt was age 68 and had no occupation listed.[11]
Curt and Jane must have moved to Oregon after 1940 and that is where Curt died in 1948[12] and Jane died in 1960. Their bodies were each buried in the Green Crest Memorial Park in Sheridan, Yamhill county, Oregon.[13]
These records do not happen to catch Curt in Florida, but those dates don't seem to make sense in Fred's narrative. Curt was born in 1874 and would have been 43 years old in 1917. The story says that, "About 1922 or 1923 he came back from Florida..." Since Curt is in every census from 1900 through 1940 living in Nebraska, then his trip would have had to have been shorter than ten years and between those census years. The likely time span between 1910 and 1920 was further shortened by Curt's draft registration in 1918 in Brock. Another point to consider is that the Model T Ford started production in 1908, so his trip could probably not have been in that decade before 1910. The return date of 1917 is probably more likely to be correct and the trip was a maximum of seven years in duration. I've always wondered if Jane went to Florida with him, keeping house in a tiny motor home parked on the beach. The sources on this profile have two different death years. His Oregon death record and his gravestone both have 1948. The Fred South biography has 1949. The 1948 year is being used because the two sources for that year are considered stronger than the biography.[14]
