Biography

Marie Madeleine Theriault was born about 1729 in Acadie, daughter of Pierre Theriot and Marguerite Guérin. [1]

In 1752, she was listed on the 1752 La Roque census with her family, at Baie Mordienne, Ile Royale (now Cape Breton Island). [2][1]

Marie married Jean François Blin (born in Havre de Fourché, Ile Royale, Acadie, Nouvelle-France; son of Jacques Blin and Francoise Durand) on 3 February 1755 in Louisbourg, Ile Royale, Nouvelle France. Their daughter was Marguerite Blin (1773– ). [3][1]

Their children were: [4]

  1. Pierre BLIN, b. 1758 d. 20 Sep 1773, St-Pierre, St-Pierre-et-Miquelon,
  2. Madeleine BLIN, b. 16 Jun 1761, St-Servan,
  3. Joseph Ignace BLIN, b. 13 Aug 1763, St-Servan,
  4. Guillemine Françoise BLIN, b. 15 Dec 1765, Petit-Miquelon, St-Pierre-et-Miquelon,
  5. Jean BLIN, b. ca 1767
  6. Jean Simon BLIN, b. ca 1769
  7. Marguerite BLIN, b. 26 Nov 1773, St-Pierre, St-Pierre-et-Miquelon,
  8. Marie BLIN, b. ca 1777

The family was likely deported to France in 1758 during the second wave of deportations that took place on Ile Saint-Jean and Ile-Royale. They lived in the parish of St. Servan between 1761-1763, where their children Madeleine and Joseph-Ignace were born. In 1763, at the end of the Seven Years' War, the Acadian exiles were free to go where they wished. Since Ile Saint-Jean and Ile Royale were no longer going to be French, they chose to go to the islands of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, a French colony.

However, in early October 1767, Acadians were expelled from Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon on the order of Louis XV because of the overpopulation of the islands.[5] The family traveled in 1767 aboard La Félicité from Miquelon to Saint-Martin de Ré, an island near Rochefort, France. [6] From there, they moved on to La Rochelle.

Jean and Madeleine and some of their children are listed on the 1770 list of refugees in La Rochelle. [7]

Madeleine was listed alone on the 1772 census at La Rochelle. [8][9]

Madeleine TERRIOT, 36, sews with cotton, of La Rochelle, married Jean Blin, seaman, fisherman and carpenter, father of three boys and two girls.

Like many Acadian families in exile, they returned to St Pierre from France and the family was listed on the St Pierre censuses in 1776 [10] and 1778. [11]

In 1778 the islands of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon were attacked, the homes destroyed, and all of the residents were deported by the British to France. [12] Jean and his family arrived at Saint-Malo, France on the ship La Marie Anne and lived in the parish of Saint-Servan between 1778-1780. [13]

Jean died in 1808 in Saint-Servan. Karen Theriot Reader estimates that her date of death was in 1810. No source given.
