Yorkshire formally known as the County of York, is a historic county of Northern England and the largest in the United Kingdom. The county town is York. Historically, Yorkshire was divided into three ridings and the Ainsty of York. The term 'riding' is of Viking origin and derives from Threthingr meaning a third part. The three ridings in Yorkshire were named the East Riding, West Riding and North Riding. Within the borders of the historic county of Yorkshire are vast stretches of unspoiled countryside. This includes the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks and part of the Peak District National Park. The emblem of Yorkshire is the White Rose. Yorkshire Day, held annually on 1 August, is a celebration of the general culture of Yorkshire, including its history to its own dialect.

Welcome to the Yorkshire Team!

Team Leader: Joan Whitaker and Dave Welburn

Goal

This Team covers the whole of Yorkshire, Cleveland and Humberside. The goal of the Yorkshire Team is to raise the standards of Yorkshire profiles across the board, to devise topics to work on which will increase the presence of Yorkshire profiles on WikiTree and to provide resources and assistance to those working on Yorkshire profiles.

What we do

  • We are responsible for improving the profiles of people from Yorkshire, This includes sourcing, connecting, merging duplicates, correcting database errors, and writing biographies. We clean up Yorkshire gedcom profiles and untangle family errors.
  • We create profiles for prominent or notable Yorkshire people and connect them to our global tree.
  • We oversee of the Yorkshire category to ensure that our information is up to date and is consistent with the other England county pages. This includes the revision of our categories, adding correct categories and deleting incorrect or unnecessary categories as needed. It also includes monitoring the page to ensure that all profiles are placed into the most accurate sub-category possible and not into any of the parent categories.
  • We maintain the Yorkshire Resources page by adding new information, checking hyperlinks are not broken and removing information that is no longer relevant.
  • We create free space pages related to events and places in Yorkshire.
  • When we can, we help and advise others who are working on Yorkshire profiles. This includes answering questions asked on G2G.

Suggestions for the Future

  • Create a free space page to list of significant events and dates that had major social impact on the people of Yorkshire. e.g, The coming of the canals and opening of coal mines. Changes to the Fishing Industry. Wars and Battles, Epedemics. Disasters.
  • Make a Free Space page listing Yorkshire Churches and the years their records started and where they are held.
  • Make list of Famous People from Yorkshire and create profiles for them. See Famous People from Yorkshire and Wikipedia.

Couldn't work out who to direct my query to, so here's hoping.

Would like the correct location category for Sherburn (near Scarborough) please which is also listed as Sherburn in Hartford Lythe, as well as being listed as Sherburn York. Have already used 'Sherburn in Elmet, Yorkshire' for some profiles, which may be incorrect.

There is also a (new) cemetery I want to list/link, yet FAG lists it at Sherburn, Ryedale District, North Yorkshire. Perhaps this is part of the St Hilda's Church, Sherburn, Yorkshire (East Riding) ?

Appreciate any assistance,

Jenny Grainger

posted by Jenny Grainger
The category is Category:Sherburn (East Riding), Yorkshire. There is a category for St Hilda's Church as a Religious Congregation; a new cemetery category would be "St Hilda's Churchyard, Sherburn, Yorkshire" and would be listed under "North Yorkshire, Cemeteries" as Sherburn moved from the East Riding to North Yorkshire in 1974.

Sherburn in Elmet is a different place, formerly in the West Riding but now also in North Yorkshire.

FindAGrave always uses the current, as opposed to historic place name/county, if that helps.

Heya, folk -- I nominated Richard Thomas Griffiths OBE as a support profile for next week's Connection-Finder theme of Santa. It seems he is managed by the England Project, but has no picture, no bio, and is not Connected. He would need all three to be considered. Anyone up for the challenge?

Hello

I'm not sure whether this would come under "Yorkshire" or "Topics" (or both). My great-grandfather and his brother were both resident in the 'Port of Hull Society Sailors Orphan Home' (later 'Newland Homes' and now 'Sailors Children's Society' in Hull the 1881 census. I have just discovered (rather late in the year) that this was founded in 1821 - so 2021 is its 200th Anniversary. I think it would be good to try to find out about the children (and possibly staff) who were there - I would start with 1881, as that's when my family members were there. If anybody could advise how to go about this, I would be grateful.

I now have a formal One Place Study for this institution (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Port_of_Hull_Society_Sailors%27_Orphan_Home_One_Place_Study)

Also, could my interests be edited to include this, along with my own family (from Hull area and Halifax) Thank you

Hello,

Please can I please have a new category for the village (and parish) of Burythorpe. It was historically in East Yorkshire, but since 1974 it is in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire.

Many thanks, Roy

I have profiles that I want to categorize as being from Thornton by Pocklington, otherwise known as Thornton on Spalding Moor. You don't seem to have a category specifically for this Thornton. You have a category for Thornton, and in it mention that it is the Thornton that is an area of the city of Bradford. You also mention that there is Thornton by Pocklington. Since the two are geographically separated, can a category for Thornton by Pocklington (aka Thornton on Spalding Moor) be created, please?

Thank you in advance, Roy

I see there are quite a few profiles from "Thornton by Pocklington" on the Thornton, Yorkshire, category already, presumably because people could not find a category for them. Perhaps the simplest solution would be to change "Thornton, Yorkshire", to "Thornton by Pocklington"? I think is misleading to have an unqualified category for "Thornton, Yorkshire", as there are so many of them, but removing it completely might lead to problems for people who have picked it up from a census and don't know which one - discuss! The present description says "Thornton is a village within the metropolitan borough of the City of Bradford, in West Yorkshire, England Also called Thornton-by-Pocklington." which is incorrect, these places are 55 miles apart and there is an existing category for Thornton near Bradford. The description should probably be changed at least.
posted by Lynn Drasdo
I think you are right, Lynn. There needs to be a new category for "Thornton (by Pocklington), Yorkshire". The profiles in the "Thornton, Yorkshire" category need to be checked and moved to the appropriate Thornton and then "Thornton, Yorkshire" needs to be deleted. Are there any other Thorntons that do not yet have categories?
posted by Stephen Heathcote
Thank you Lynn. I see you have already changed Thornton to Thornton by Pocklington. I think that is a good solution. It is always a problem when multiple places in the same county have the same short form names. In my opinion, we should always use the long form names to distinguish, and not have a short form option. This forces researchers to make their own choice, as opposed to it being a random choice for the short form, and ending up being the wrong one half the time.
posted by Roy Walmsley
All profiles now moved and the "Thornton, Yorkshire" category is set for deletion. A couple of profiles belonged in Thornton le Dale!

Does anyone have any information on any Doude, Dowde, Dodde, Dod, Dowdy or similar surnames in Yorkshire or close by? Any year would help tremendously. I'm stuck. Thanks!

I have a copy of the book "The Diary of Robert Sharp of South Cave"...Life in a Yorkshire Village 1812-1837. Just received it and haven't read it yet but in the index there is Dr William Dodd, William Dodds, William Dow and Mr Dowding. Does any of that sound like it might help?

I would love that!! I’m really getting stuck because there are a million spellings and half the older ancestors didn’t use a last name, but just the place.
posted by Cameron Dowdy
The earliest person I could see in a record anywhere was Alice Dowd baptised 22 Feb 1630 at Crayke, about 40 miles from South Cave which Susan mentioned. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NLB5-SJR I have a book with over 39000 surnames for the West Riding Hearth Tax 1672, and there is only one entry anything like, a Widow Dods of Gowdall. Gowdall was later in the East Riding and is only 20 miles from South Cave.

Oops! Crayke was North Riding I think, not East. It's all east of where I am!

Hi Cameron, Dowde is my mother's maiden name, I have taken that side of my family back to John Dowde Born circa 1788, he is my brick wall. The majority of my Dowde's are from Hull originally and then moved to Sheffield. If I can help in any way please let me know. Chris.

As a PS: there was a Thomas Boulsover christened in Eckington, Derbyshire, on 8 Feb 1705/06, but the details don't match what is on Wikipedia. I think he is a different person. Britannica might have conflated them.
