Biography

John Shay was probably born in about 1809. He is the son of David Shay and Agnes Unknown.^[1]

John Shay was named in his father David Shay's will made in Crawford County, Ohio, on 5 February 1847. John is identified as the father of David's grandson Stephen Decatur Shay in that will.^[1]

No further record of him has been found.

Birth Date Estimate

The birth date estimate of 1809 is a very rough guess, based on the gap in dates between his siblings Jane and David. He is probably either one of the two boys under age 10, or the boy aged 10-15, in his father's household in Belmont County in 1820.^[2]
