I was born in New Mexico but grew up mostly on army posts and air force bases overseas. My family lived in Eritrea, Italy and Germany before finally returning to Texas where I went to high school, college, and law school. I practiced law for many years, most of it for Delta Air Lines in Atlanta where I still live. I'm retired from that now, and pursuing my second career as a WikiTree genealogist. It doesn't pay as well, but it's a lot more fun.
Nearly all of my father's ancestors were early American colonial immigrants and their descendants who lived in many of the English colonies in North America, including Plymouth, Massachusetts Bay, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and the Carolinas. One of his emigrant ancestors came later, from England to New York in the 1830s. They all migrated west as pioneers, most through the heartland states of Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa & Kansas (a few with a brief detour through Oregon and side trips to the Republic of Texas and the New Mexico Territory), and others via a more direct southern path through Tennessee. They all eventually ended up together in Alva, Woods County, Oklahoma, where my father was born. Along the way, they got tangled up in numerous Indian wars, the Salem witch trials, the Regulator rebellion, the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Republic of Texas, the American Civil War, the Oregon Trail, and finally the Oklahoma land rush of 1889.
My mother's grandparents were Ellis Island immigrants: Italians from Castiglione Cosentino, in the Cosenza province of Calabria; and Croats from the village of Kópháza, in the Sopron province of what was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire. My wife's ancestors include Irish potato famine refugees who settled in Boston in the 1840s and more Ellis Islanders -- Poles, Croats, alpine Italians, Norwegians, and Lithuanian Jews. My children's ancestors seem to run the gamut of European-American stories.
I love the collaborative aspect of WikiTree genealogy and am always willing to help if I can, so please reach out if we share interests!
I have done an ftDNA Big Y test (haplogroup R-FT287688). I am particularly interested in Y-DNA collaboration on the McClain/McLain/McClean/MacLaine, etc., line originating in Scotland.
According to 23&me, my mtDNA haplogroup is V6a (origin in the Croatian community in Austria-Hungary).

Just wanted to say, “Hi” to a sixth cousin! We share Robert Hicks and Sarah Jordan as ancestors. Thank you for your excellent contributions to the efforts of so many genealogy enthusiasts and cousins! I was wondering if you have ever had identity issues with your “private” info not being so private. I’m reluctant to add too much online and I’m almost a couple decades your senior.
Thanks for your contributions to Puritan Great Migration (PGM) project profiles.
Like all WikiTree projects we check in with team members periodically to find out about their continued interest in the project. Would you please respond by February 12, 2024, to let us know about your interest:
1. Would you like to continue as a PGM project team member?;
2. Do you have any suggestions for PGM Project priorities in the next year (optional)?;
3. Do you have interest in taking a more active role within the PGM project, and if so, what you might be interested in doing (optional)?
Please respond to this comment on your profile, or if you'd like, send a private message to either Bobbie (Madison) Hall or S (Hill) Willson.
Thanks for all you do for PGM and WikiTree!
Regards,
Bobbie and Sharon, Co-Leaders, Puritan Great Migration Project
Looks like we’re related (but the point is we all are). Joseph Shields was my g-g-g grandfather. Your WikiTree resume’ is very impressive. I got involved researching my husband’s tree (James Yard Lawrence) which was quite interesting. Then I tried my side. Have not been active for past year but hope to get back to work soon. Regards, Donna Warren Lawrence
Great Member of the Week interview! I'm so glad that Ancestry user pointed you here. It sounds like you're a real credit to our community.
Chris
Congrats on the Super Star Badge!
Cheers, Liz

Sorry for the delay. Hi 7th cousin, nice to meet you. I added you to the trusted list of Thomas Askren and our common ancestors. Thank you for cleaning up the profile. Let me know if I can help. Jeff
Thank you for self-certifying for the Pre-1700 badge! Participation in a Pre-1700 Project is strongly encouraged for those wishing to edit Pre-1700 profiles. Collaboration is essential because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants.
It looks like the US History would be a good fit with the tag you entered. Adding the tag United_States_History will help you get updates about activity for that project.
Do you have any questions? Let me know. I'm happy to help! :-)

This is a courtesy e-mail to see how things are going. Are you enjoying WikiTree so far?
Have the tips in the New Member How-Tos been helpful? Most of us still have some questions after reviewing them.

PS Tags are clickable links to a page of other people who have that tag and links to resources. To get the best results, add separate tags for each surname and spelling variation of interest. You can have up to 20 total.
I am pleased to confirm you as a full member, and welcome you to the WikiTree family, your contributions will go a long way to joining the world together.
I would suggest starting with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration.
I am here to answer any question you have, no matter how trivial you may think it is. There is no such thing as a silly question. Please add as much information as you can, it all helps to turn a name back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site
Happy tree climbing
