Jane Shay was born in about 1806. According to the 1850 census, she was born in Ohio, but it is also possible she came to Ohio with parents as a very young girl. The 1860 census gives her place of birth as Pennsylvania.[1][2] Jane was the daughter of David Shay and Agnes Unknown.[3]
Marriage
She married Sampson Warden, probably in about 1830 based on the date of birth of their first known child in about 1831. In 1837, Sampson Warden and his wife Jane sold a 40 acre tract of land in Crawford County, Ohio, to Jane's father David Shay.[4]
Later Life
By 1837, Sampson and Jane Warden were described as "of Crawford County," Ohio, when they sold the 40 acre tract mentioned above to Jane's father David Shay. They appear to have moved shortly after that transaction to Perry County, Ohio, where Sampson Wardon appears as the head of his household in Reading township in 1840.[5] Both Sampson and Jane were still alive and living in Putnam County, Ohio, in 1860.[2]
Children
Children of Jane Shay and Sampson Warden include at least:[1]
Nancy, b. abt 1831
Benjamin, b. abt 1833
David Shay, b. 1835
Mary J., b. abt 1839
Robert, b. abt 1841
Isabel, b. abt 1845
Of these, "David Shay Warden" is identified as a grandson in the 1847 will of Jane's father David Shay.[3]
Research Notes
LNAB
The identification of Jane, the wife of Sampson Warden, as Jane Shay is also confirmed by the 1909 and 1923 marriage license application of their son James K. Warden, which identify his father as Sampson or Samson Warden and his mother's maiden name as "Jane Shay" and "Jane Shea."[6][7]
