Biography

Leonard was born in 1926, son of Henry Say and Henrietta Hindman. ^[1]

Len obtained an apprenticeship as a fitter & turner with the City Electric Light and used to ride his bicycle daily to the Doboy Powerhouse usually crossing the Brisbane River on the Hamilton ferry, a distance of some seven miles each way. After several years he upgraded to a second hand motor cycle. After work he would attend night classes at the Central Technical College and ultimately after about four or five years received a diploma in mechanical engineering. ^[2]

Alfred Say's memoirs continue: "Late one afternoon, a policeman knocked on our door to advise us that Len had an accident, coming home from work on his motorbike. At Bulimba, a tram moving from the single track to the double track, which was a short distance from the terminus, swung over and collected Len. He suffered a compound fractured right leg, a damaged shoulder as well as other injuries. Later that night we were waiting outside the hospital ward, when a solemn faced doctor told us that Len's leg was too severely damaged to save it." ^[3]

After he recovered and came home he married Faith Erhlich on 24 April at Lutwyche Methodist Church in Brisbane and they lived for a short time at Banyo. ^[4]

Len, having his qualifications, obtained an engineer's position with the Lithgow Small Arms Factory, so they then moved to Lithgow. Len and Faith had 3 children and now 11 grandchildren. They spent most of their married lives in Lithgow and retired there. ^[5]

They relocated to a unit at Lake Haven which is a little north of Sydney. Later Len died after a long battle with prostate cancer.’ ^[6] Len is buried in Wyong, in the NSW central coast area. ^[7]
