Biography

Esther was born in 1915, the first child of Henry Say and Henrietta Hindman. [1]

Following school, she obtained an office job with the North Australian Rubber Mills (NARM). [2] [3]

Esther married Mervyn George Franklin in 1943, when she was aged 28 and Mervyn was 40. Esther and Mervyn had both lived on Schneider Rd in Eagle Farm. [4] Mervyn had been operating the dairy farm, with his mother, since his father's death in 1930. However the Franklin farm and its land was resumed in 1942 to make way for the Allison Engine Testing stands. So at the time of their marriage he had been forced to move away from Schneider Rd. [5]

Following their marriage, Esther and Mervyn lived at 91 Gellibrand St, Clayfield, across the road from Mervyn's brother Ivan and his wife. [6]

Following the loss of the farm, Mervyn and Ivan purchased a stall at the Rocklea Markets, that Mervyn operated until his retirement. [7]

Esther and Mervyn had three children. Her children recall her as a hard-working, loving and sincere mother. She cooked, baked, sewed and did needlecraft. She ran the house and supported them all. Her recipes and some of her needlework survives to this day.

Sadly, Esther passed away on 20 September 1971 at the age of 56. The death certificate stated her cause of death was (a) coronary occlusion (immediate), (b) hypertension (years) and arteriosclerosis (years). She had been admitted to hospital feeling unwell, but her death was a shock to everyone. [8] She was laid to rest at Pinnaroo lawn Cemetery at Aspley. Her gravestone can be seen at [2].

Esther had lived to see the marriage of her eldest son, but not of her other son, her daughter's 21st nor her daughter's marriage, nor the birth of what would ultimately be her 9 grandchildren, the offspring of her 3 children. She was, and is, sorely missed by those who love her.
