Biography

James was baptised on 7 July, 1816 in North Bradley, Wilsthire, England, eldest son and second child of James Say and Eleanor Viner. [1]

James, a farmer, married Susannah Evans Hall in the Parish of Marston Bigot on 15 February 1838. [2] [3]

A few years later, in 1841, James and Susannah were living in At Rowe, near Hemington, Somerset, with their first two children, Kerenhappuch (aka Karen) aged 3 and Sarah and a female servant Elizabeth Sawyer. [4]

Whilst James' father (James seemed to have been financially successful as a farmer, James may have had a harder time. The family moved around, and older children moved out of home to find work.

In 1851, James and Susannah were living at Berkley Rd, Berkley, with their 6 children. The first five were born in Hemington, and then the youngest child, Susannah, aged 3, was born in Dilton Marsh. [5]

By 1861, the family had moved to Shepton Mallet, where children Emily and Edward were born. James and Susannah lived with 4 of their children at Down Side, Shepton Mallet. [6]

James and Susannah had the following children:

  • Kerenhappuch (1838 - ?) - married in East Stonehouse, Devon
  • Sarah Ellen (1839-1875) - married, lived in London, 1 daughter before dying from TB
  • James (1841-1917)- emigrated to Australian goldfields, then New Zealand. Married twice, 11 children.
  • Alfred (1844-1917) - a farmer who married and had 6 children
  • Anna Maria (1846-1905) - had son Harry in England (unknown father) then married and later emigrated to Middlesborough, Massachusetts, USA with their 2 children in 1892
  • Susannah (1848-1891) married and had 5 children, died in Shepton Mallet
  • Lydia Ellen (1851-1857) died age 6 from "atrophy" (failure to thrive)
  • William Hal (1855-1904) - first of siblings to emigrate to Middlesborough, Massachusetts in 1882. Married, no children.
  • Emily (1857-1937) married and had 5 children in Bedford. Married a second time.
  • Henry Edward (1860-after 1871)

in 1871, James was a labourer, and lived with Susannah in Lower Downside, with children William, Emily, Edward and grandson Harry. [7]

In 1880, the land James was occupying in Shepton Mallet was resumed for sewerage works. The land was in the detached portion of the Parish of Pilton known as Ham, and was "between the woods and the road from Shepton Mallet to Wells. The land was owned by Arthur Towner Somerville and was in 4 sections: 2 of pasture, one of Buildings, ad one of House, garden and buildings. [8]

By 1881, James was aged 57, and his occupation had changed to being a stone cutter. He lived with wife Susannah and son William in Shepton Mallet. Grandson Arthur Rossiter (daughter Susannah's son) was also visiting. [9]

Later Life

James' wife Susannah died in 1888 from "senile decay".

James married widow Mary Ann Tucker (nee White) in 1893. Mary Ann had also been born in North Bradley, Wiltshire, and was aged 64.

In 1901, James lived at 13 Church Lane, Shepton Mallet with wife Mary Ann. [10]
