Biography
As a young man, William was a farm labourer in Shepton Mallet, living with his parents. [1]
William's brother James had already immigrated to new Zealand and then Australia in the 1860's. William, however, immigrated to Middleborough, Massachusetts in 1882 when he was aged 28. Soon after arriving, William married housekeeper Amanda Millard. It seems likely that William already knew Amanda: she was born in the same town as him and had moved to Shepton Mallet before moving to the USA a year before William to work as a housekeeper. [2]
In America, William was initially a railway worker and later a farmer. The couple had no children. He died in 1904 age 57 from urethral stricture (probably due to prostate enlargement). [3]
He was buried in the Central Cemetery, Middleborough, Massachusetts. [4]
