Mission & Goals

  • The purpose of this project is to consolidate all Alaska-related sub-projects, free space pages, and resources, both internal and external, in one place.
  • Our goal is to create and develop well-crafted and sourced profiles in WikiTree for those who lived in the State of Alaska before and after statehood.

Task List

People

  1. Add Alaska-related profiles, checking for existing profiles to avoid duplication. If any duplicate profiles exist, request merges, starting with the oldest generation.
  2. See the Alaska State Maintenance Category "Needs" categories
    1. Needs GEDCOM Cleanup If profiles were loaded by GEDCOM, use WikiTree Styles and Standards to clean up residue and broken links.
    2. Needs Biography: Write comprehensive, well-sourced biographies.
    3. Needs Profiles Created: Profiles need to be linked to the greater WikiTree. Try to find the connection. Make sure profiles of all family members are correct and documented.
    4. Needs More Records: Search out original rather than derivative documentation and add sources.
      1. Unsourced Profiles
      2. Needs Birth Record
      3. Needs Marriage Record
      4. Needs Death Record
  3. Add profiles for those who obtained land grants and homesteaded in Alaska. See the Homesteaders Project
  4. Help develop the Native Americans Project with information about Alaska state tribes.
  5. Help find the Last Name at Birth (LNAB) for Alaska Unknowns using the Profile Improvement Project Unknowns Team Process

Errors/Suggestions

  1. Work on Alaska unconnected and unsourced profiles.
  2. Work on for profiles in Alaska], as reported by the Data Doctors Project.

State Resources

  • Note: Under Alaska law, all vital records are strictly confidential until they are released as public records after a set period of time: 100 years for births and 50 years for all other events.
  • Currently, birth records are available for 1922 and before, and only from the time birth records were kept depending on the location.
  • Marriage and death records from 1972 and previous to the date records were kept depending on the location.

  1. If you find a free online resource:
    1. Check to make sure a free-space page doesn't already exist.
    2. Create space page - see: Share Source on WikiTree
    3. Add internal link to new page to the correction section on Sources-Alaska page
  2. If you have any Alaska state resources that you are willing to do lookups on, please add them to the Resources Page.
  3. If you live in Alaska, please consider adding Category: Alaska Research Assistance to your Wikitree profile page.
