Biography

Marcie (Korte) Ruiz is a member of the Korte Name Study Project.

I was born in 1962 to Richard Korte and Shirlena Harris in Northern California. Other than one year spent in Denver, Colorado, I have lived my whole life here. In 1994 I married Ken Ruiz and we have one wonderful son.

Now that I am retired, I finally can spend the amount of time I want on Genealogy. I've always been interested in my family history. When I was eight, I was thrilled to see a gravestone for my 3x great-grandmother in the Missouri Ozarks. Thanks to my grandmother, I knew all the family stories about her. Thanks to genealogy, I now know that many of the stories weren't quite true.

My paternal family came from New Mexico and my roots are very deep there. I've managed to track down a few lines to Oñate and several lines to the new colonists from Zacatecas and Mexico City. I also have a 3x great-grandfather and a 2x great-grandfather from Prussia who gave me my German maiden name. My family moved to California in 1943 but I'm still proud to be an nuevomexicana.

My maternal family is almost all from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Most of them arrived in Virginia and began the route west to Kentucky and Tennessee, eventually landing in southern Missouri to stay until they headed further west to California in search of jobs in 1950.

New Mexico Resources to Share

I finally created a list of resources for New Mexico that I own and ones you can find online. The Spanish Recolonization of New Mexico: An Account of the Families Recruited at Mexico City in 1693, Revolt of the Pueblo Indians of New Mexico and Otermíns's Reconquest, 1680-1682, and the series The Journals of Don Diego de Vargas, including By Force of Arms, To the Royal Crown Restored, Blood on the Boulders, That Disturbances Cease, and The Settling of Accounts, are the most difficult to find. I am willing to do lookups in any of the books I own. I can also help with reading or translating New Mexico church records on FamilySearch film (my Spanish is only so-so, but my Catholic Church Records Spanish is great!)

Advance Directive

In the event of my death, I would like all of the profiles for people not living that I manage alone to be changed to Open. Space pages that I have created can all be changed to Open. If I missed anything (and for the Red/still living profiles on my Watchlist), I ask that they are managed by Team Wiki or a WikiTree Leader at the discretion of WikiTree. If you decide to participate again in January's upcoming Connect a Thon, the registration this time will be somewhat different. (You can read about it here.) Hi Marcie,

I am interested in joining the Korte name study. My great great grandmother was a Korte and I think I may have finally found her parents after almost 6 months of looking. I'd like to do some more learning on it.

Nice catch on Mitchusson's name being misspelled on a category.

Thank you so much for signing up with the Toddlin' Tortoises in the January 2023 Connect-a-Thon. We may be slower than many, but we are all still winners!
Hertyl and Spertyl Slowsky Tortoises face each other, with the words “Toddlin’ Tortoises” above their heads, the words “think everyone is a” below that. Beneath that, and between Hertyl and Spertyl is the WikiTree globe — superimposed with the words "Wonderful WikiTreer" — and beneath the entire tableau are the words "and that We're all winners in the end". Because we are. Winners.

Marcie, thanks so much for being part of the Toddlin' Tortoises Team for the July 2022 Connect-a-Thon. Every well-constructed profile added helps to grow a healthier Tree!

Two tortoises, Hertyl and Spertyl, dressed in their spiffy Connect-a-Thon Tuxedo coats, the one on the left holding a top hat in "hand", and the one on the right with a glass of champagne. Between them is a multi-carriage wood or coal burning steam train, near the wheels of which are the words "slow train". Above the train is the WikiTree DNA tree logo, across which are the words "Wonderful WikiTreer". Floating above the logo are the words "Toddlin' Tortoises", and at the bottom of the image is the phrase "We're all winners in the end" — because we are. All winners.
Hertyl and Spertyl just want to say "What a Wonderful WikiTreer you are".

Hi Traci,

You can take me off the Germany project. I think my gg-grandfather is one of the young men fleeing the Prussian military who changed his name on the ship manifest. I've found other Korte genealogists and they have had no luck finding him either. Thanks!
